Diss hosted league leaders Newmarket and fell to
their 4th home league defeat of the season. The first
half was even and there were signs leading up to half time that
Diss may be able to win the match. However, Newmarket controlled
the second half and ran out comfortable winners. The loan period
of goalkeeper Ben Nower ended in the week and he decided to join
Felixstowe and Walton. This meant a return to goal for Mark
Camidge in the only change to the Diss team which had won at
Cornard United in their previous match.
Camidge made his first save in the 3rd
minute when he dived to hold a header from Andy Eady at a
disputed corner. Steve Best was kicked in the head and Camidge
clattered to the ground as The Jockeys displayed a physical
approach to the game. The Tangerines came close to opening the
scoring when Ben Deacon hit a shot into the side netting in the
16th minute. Newmarket went ahead in the 20th
minute when Camidge pushed a shot from Ardul Sannoh up on to the
bar and Lee Salmons tapped in from two yards out as the ball
fell gently to his feet. Ten minutes later Diss equalised.
George Wilson played the ball through and ex-tangerine Ricky
Cornish tried to cut it out and play it to a fellow defender but
only found Ben Deacon. He ran from 35 yards out and beat
the advancing Sean Greygoose with a left foot shot from 10 yards
out.
Camidge made a save to keep out a Colin Vowden
shot at a 34th minute corner and turned a shot from
the edge of the penalty area by David Grainger round the post in
the 42nd minute. The last action of the first half
saw Danny Partridge and Luke Catchpole have shots blocked after
a run by Andy Moody, for whom injury meant that it was to be his
last contribution to the match, before Alan North put the loose
ball over the bar.
Jamie Thurlbourne sent the ball into the danger
area in the 47th minute and some poor defending meant
that Grainger was free to head the Jockeys into the lead from
close range. Partridge collected the ball wide on the left wing
four minutes later and beat a defender before cutting into the
penalty area and flashing a shot from 16 yards out into the side
netting. Grainger was wide to another dangerous Thurlbourne
centre when well placed in the 58th minute. The
Jockeys made the game safe in the 71st minute when a
clearance struck Partridge on the arm and a penalty was awarded.
Thurlbourne scored from the penalty kick.
