Diss produced their best display of the season
and had they been able to produce this form more often it would
have been The Tangerines rather than Clacton who would have been
challenging for promotion.
There was a lengthy delay after just three
minutes when a nasty clash of heads meant that Mark Shadrack and
Danny Smith needed hospital treatment. Shadrack had a deep cut
above his left eye which required five internal and eight
external stitches.
16 minutes after the game kicked off Diss took
the lead. Jake Berry found Danny Partridge on the left.
He cut in and beat a defender to shoot in. Three minutes later
an Ed Cussons corner was headed in from four yards out by
Jason Hunt. Diss were in control and Gareth Dunkley turned a
cross against his own post. It was no surprise when Diss went
3-0 ahead two minutes into first half added time. A superb
passing moved ended with Steve Wright crossing low from the
right for Jason Hunt to shoot in from five yards out. It
was not until deep into added time that Sean Hillier and Mark
White hit shots off target.
Danny Partridge raced more than 60 yards
from inside his own half and beat two players before making it
4-0 from 12 yards out in the 50th minute. Matty Hill
made a superb save to a long range Kevin Coyle free kick and did
even better to a point blank Chris Ribchester header at the
resulting corner. In the 55th minute Greg Heighway
headed in from six yards out at a corner.
Berry played a free kick from near the goal line
just outside the penalty area on the left in the 63rd
minute for Ben Soanes to head towards goal from five yards out.
Danny Partridge diverted the ball up with a backward
header from a yard out to complete his hat-trick. George Wilson
was on target with a header as The Tangerines threatened to
score with every attack. In the 70th minute they went
6-1 ahead when Cussons played a low cross in from the right.
Craig Rulton spilled the ball and Dave Adams shot in from
three yards out.
The Tangerines relaxed and Coyle pulled a goal
back in the 73rd minute when he shot in, despite Diss
appeals for hand ball, after Hill used his feet to block his
first shot. James Wilson made an excellent goal line clearance
to deny Heighway five minutes later. A fine run from Terry
Minshull in added time resulted in Soanes bringing a good save
from Rulton.
