Match Report - Tony Collins

Diss were twice two goals behind in a lively and, at times, controversial game before scoring two late goals to secure the point that was at the very least just reward for their efforts.

Diss came back into the game with the wind at their backs. Luke Catchpole was just high from 15 yards after bringing down a pass from Sam Bryant after some good passing play. George Watts-Sturrock long throws in were causing panic in the Bury defence. Jordan Rocastle had an overhead kick blocked after a head on by Dan Wynne moments before another brought a 41st minute goal. Brendan Foley headed on at the near post for Dan Wynne to head in from five yards out.

Diss started the second half in a confident mood and it seemed just a matter of time before they would draw level. However, they fell behind in an unusual and controversial manner in the 64th minute. Luke Ingram had been down, seemingly injured, for several seconds with his team mates calling for the ball to be put out of play. The ball went to Diss central defender Chris Gibbons. He lost control of the ball and stopped. Will Hitter collected the ball and run through unchallenged to shoot past Abbott and cause some ill feeling between the two teams for the rest of the match.

Diss had strong penalty claims turned away when substitute Alex Fitzgerald was pulled to the floor, but there was still time for a grandstand finish. In the 87th minute a corner was cleared to George Watts-Sturrock. He was 25 yards from goal and sent a powerful right foot smashing into the top corner of the net for a genuine goal of the season contender. Abbott made a good save to keep the game alive. A minute into added time Watts-Sturrock delivered a perfect free kick from just outside the left edge of the penalty area. It had pace and was at a perfect height for Chris Gibbons to head the equaliser from six yards out. It was the first home draw for Diss after ten games – eight successive wins at the end of last season followed by two defeats this season.
