Getting Married In Scotland: There
are still no residency requirements for a Scottish Wedding. You must merely
satisfy the criteria laid down in the Marriage Notice, which you must
complete and return to the Registrar before you can be married. This document
is obtainable from the appropriate Registrars Office or can be downloaded
(along with more information about marriage in Scotland) from the
General
Register Office website. If you experience any difficulty obtaining
this document Celtic Knots can mail it to you and advise on it's completion.
The legal requirements for a wedding to take place in Scotland are listed
below. Any two persons may marry in Scotland provided that: They are at least sixteen years of age on the day of marriage They are not related to one another in a way which would prevent their marrying They are unmarried (any person who has already been married must provide documentary evidence that the previous marriage has been ended by death, divorce, or annulment) They are not of the same sex They are capable of understanding the nature of a marriage ceremony and of consenting to marriage The marriage would be regarded as valid in any foreign country to which either party belongs Documents required are as follows: Birth Certificates of both parties Proof of Decree Absolute (if applicable) Death Certificate of former spouse (if applicable) If you are domiciled outside the United Kingdom you must also provide: Passports of both parties A certificate of no impediment issued by the competent authority stating that you are free to marry The Registrar requires that all documents are originals and if any document is in a language other than English, a certified translation must also be supplied. At this moment, civil (non-religious) ceremonies may only be carried out within a registry office (government office). Couples wishing to marry in one of the many licensed venues must have a religious ceremony. But whether you want a civil or religious marriage, the Marriage Schedule must be collected no earlier than 7 days before the proposed date of the marriage. Legally, this can only be done by the Bride or Groom, but Celtic Knots can advise on where to go to collect this document.
