The Nautical Institute

WEST of ENGLAND Branch

presents a

SEMINAR

entitled

‘The Master/Pilot Relationship’

A Training Need?

Tuesday 1st June 2004

at the

Concorde Suite

BAWA Conference Centre

Bristol

A vessel navigating in the constrained waters of a harbour and its approaches crucially requires a good working relationship to be established between Master and Pilot for safe passage to/from the berth.

Each has their own field of expertise, the Pilot specialises in ship handling skills, knowledge of the local environment and use of tugs; the Master knows the characteristics of his vessel and personnel.

How well is this relationship understood by the Maritime community, and how is it supported by legislation and training?

The Seminar aims to explore this relationship, clarify the situation and identify training needs to be addressed by the industry.

It will prove of interest to the following:

Masters and Officers

Pilots

Shipping Company personnel associated with training sea staff

Colleges and schools associated with training of Pilots and Marine Personnel

Port officers and personnel associated with the training and assessment of Pilots

MCA personnel associated with the examination of Masters and other officers for Certificates of Competence
