As it so often does in my own preferred 'Alternative Histories': emboldened by smuggling and offshore-banking derived wealth, wielder of a powerful navy (combating aggression wherever it wants to start it), adorned by a glittering capital at Yarmouth and populated by proud 'caulkheads' speaking Hampshire dialect as their principal tongue ...

[ Postscript 2003 - I secured a copy of 'Yesterday' to read and whilst amusing in a bright-young-things, Evelyn Waugh-ish sort of way, the Wight setting is pretty perfunctory.  So, though I'd still like a copy, prices over a fiver are unlikely to secure a sale.  Looking on the bright side though, the definitive Isle of Wight nationalist novel remains to be written ... ]
