day, when some yet unborn Islamic theologian or Aborigine explorer
'shall, in the midst of a vast solitude, take his stand on a broken arch
of London Bridge to sketch the ruins of St Pauls' [ * ] they might also
attempt a concluding audit on English Literature. If so, justice should
dictate that they mention Rosemary Pardoe as the late 20th century
salvatrix of the English Ghost-story tradition. Or, at the very least,
say that she gave it the kiss of life and a firm-but-fair talking to.
Instigator and Head Librarian of the 'Haunted Library' and self-effacing
but wisely-guiding editor of 'Ghosts and Scholars' and its numerous
siblings, Rosemary was justly honoured by a grand celebratory gathering
on that journal's twentieth birthday in 1999. Conceivably less to her credit is Rosemary's early championing of my 'Binscombe Tales' - for which I shower blessings upon her. The Haunted Library have published four chapbooks of my tales. [ * ] Macaulay, waxing lyrical
