TAN LEJOS ----------- DEMASIADO LEJOS
7 inch
The 7 inch
version from Japan. This came in
a plain sleeve with an additional lyric sheet (with lyrics in
both English and Japanese) with the sleeve picture printed at the
front. The sleeve indicates a price of 700 Yen.
Most countries issued the same picture sleeve for the release of this single, including Australia, Brazil (33 RPM), France, Germany, Holland, Portugal, Spain, and the UK. The single featured tour dates on the back of the sleeve (except Australia). The B-side was Walk Of Life except in the USA and Canada (See below).
The 7 inch
Version from the USA. The B-side was If
I Had You, a song originally
featured on the EP Twisting By
The Pool.
Only the USA and Canada issued the 7 inch single in a different sleeve, Canada used the picture sleeve of the album and the B-side was Going Home - Theme From Local Hero' (Live Version). Some Countries issued the 7 inch single in plain sleeve or their own record company sleeves. Hungary featured a plain white sleeve with the following Dire Straits logo.

The 7 inch from South Africa contained the tracks So Far Away/Walk Of Life, (I'm not sure if it originally came in a picture sleeve, my copy has a plain white sleeve). The Catalogue number was the same as in the UK, it was DSTR 9.

Various promotional copies of the 7 inch single have been issued around the world. A single-sided 'Acetate' in the UK, Italian "Disco Promo" which featured Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears on the B-side and a promo from the USA featuring So Far Away on both sides. A promo from Japan is almost identical to the standard release.
The
Brazil 7 inch B-side label released to co-incide with
"California Dreams". Nothing
Special about this release, identical to it's standard release,
except for the added label stuck over the original label on the
flip side, which is clearly visible underneath. The record is
said to be rare, issued only as a promo, copies sell for about
£25 ($40).
The playing times of most 7 inch singles was 4 minutes, 0 seconds, although the French got an extra 40 seconds. The Italian "Juke-box Promo" lasted only 3 minutes 30 seconds.
12 inch
The 12 inch
single from Canada. Two discs
make up this package containing 5 tracks. They are:- So Far Away (Extended Version -5' 06"), Going
Home - Theme from Local Hero (Live version), Sultans Of
Swing (Live version -10'
56"), Why Worry
(Instrumental segment) and Fear And Hatred.
Most other 12 inch issues used the standard picture sleeve as the 7 inch, including the UK, France and Germany.
A 12 inch promo was available in the USA, designed to play at 33 RPM featuring the 7 inch single version and extended version at 5 minutes 6 seconds.
Special Formats
The UK issued a limited 10 inch version of the single using the same picture on the sleeve as the 7 inch and 12 inch, and a single-sided 10 inch acetate was available, albeit very limited. I also have an Hungarian 7 inch single with the same label both sides, although both sides play differently.
