Generations Starter Kit 8.0, with its multimedia tutorial, Internet tools and helpful "how to" book, introduces you to the basics and helps you navigate the world of on- and offline genealogy data and research techniques. You won't waste time scavenging for information from multiple databases when you search the Generations World Name Index's consolidated biography of 350 million names. Enjoy exclusive features, including a virtual 3-D tree that adds your in-laws. What's in a name? Find out by searching over 350 million names, using the resources contained in the Generations Family Tree: Starter Kit 8.0. This 11-CD set has everything to get you started: a simple tutorial; an indexed access to genealogy resources on the Internet with 75,000 links; 4000 maps showing European countries, UK counties and cities between 1856 and 1920; an easy-to-use family tree which can be displayed in 3-D; and a database containing the world Name Index (1500-1999). This is the first-ever UK edition of the software, and throughout there is a focus on providing UK as well as world links and databases.Installation is easy, since the software is designed with new computer users in mind, and the tutorial covers the basics of using databases and the Internet to fill in gaps in your family tree, as well as the basics of offline genealogy. While you are waiting for the installation or your Internet connection, browse through the paperback copy of Netting Your Ancestors by Web guru Cyndi Howells and Ultimate Guide to Tracing Your British Ancestry; these will save you precious minutes and hours of research time and give you ideas for searches you might never have thought of otherwise. Once you have a few names, add data such as birth, marriage and death dates; military service; and places of residency; then plan how you will organise your chart. Use traditional tree structures with lovely full-colour backgrounds, cascading pedigrees and family-history data sheets, or even a 3-D tree unique to this package. Any point in any structure can be linked to text, photos, sounds or video files.
More advanced genealogists may want to consider Generations 8: UK Grande Suite which includes extra research databases, cookery and digital imagery resources. Still, Generations Family Tree: Starter Kit is indeed a good starting point: it will make genealogy fun, and you just may find that Grandma Rose by any other name is just as sweet.
