Direct ancestors increase in a steady, uniform pattern. I have two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents and so on. However, the possibilities coming from the other direction are enormous. Working downward from my grandparents - assume that each pair had four children, and all of these married and produced four children each. From these two sets of grandparents I would find myself with twelve aunts and uncles and forty-eight 1st cousins. Looking at families prior to the 20th century, four children would be a very modest number, so it is easy to see that the possible number of descendants from an ancestor of four or five generations away could be something along the lines of Dean Swift's fleas.
Apart from Talbot, I have a vast number of other surnames which connect into my family tree - some by means of a little lateral genealogy. On some of these names I have quite a bit of information. On others the information I have is virtually nil - probably just a reference to a person which has been given to me verbally, such as "I believe she married someone called Joe Bloggs". Bearing that caveat in mind, I can offer information on the following surnames:
In most instances, places in the Vale Of The White Horse, (e.g. Abingdon, Harwell, Wantage, Wallingford etc) will have a pre-1974 reference, and so will be shown as BRK and not OXF.

Another group of people who I find worthwhile recording are the Witnesses to weddings
within my family.
Inevitably, there are many whose names do not appear in the family at all. There are others
who appear to be local to the area, so they could be close friends or cousins. A few appear
to be Parish Clerks, as they witness nearly every wedding in that particular church. There are
some who carry the same surname as the bride or groom who I am not able to find within the
family or indeed anywhere.
The bottom line so far as I am concerned is that they seem to
have some relevance to the family and are worth recording and in several instances they have
supplied clues for family connections.
There is no clue as to the probable age of a person who turns up for a wedding and signs
the Register as a Witness - is it a schoolfriend of the bride or groom, the best man, a distant
cousin, an aged aunt, or what? As I need to put the person into some sort of time scale,
I guess an age. Half of their three-score years and ten or thereabouts, so assume 35-40.
It could be twenty years or so out in either direction, but at least I have some sort of
starting point.
