My database currently occupies about 9mB of hard disc space under Microsoft Access 97 and my Family Trees, which were constructed on Aldus Pagemaker, occupy over 10mB. In 'hard-copy' terms, my tree runs to over 350 A4 sheets. (Aldus has been re-named Adobe) and I am up to Version 6.
I understand that this is a problem if I want to send information to someone who wishes to receive it in GEDCOM format. I rather selfishly take the attitude "that is their problem".
When I started moving my records from my card index on to my old BBC 'B' computer I used Clare's BetaBase, which worked quite well, but had its limitations. I know of no specialised FamHist software which was around at that time. I did at a later date look at a couple of FamHist programs but they fell far short of what I expected. It seemed that none of them actually did any WORK for you. You put an answer to a question into the system, and later it would give you the answer to that question if you wanted it. For Heaven's sake - it all seemed so pointless, so I stuck with my own way of working. Furthermore, the way family trees were laid out by these programs was pretty abysmal.
This is why I have stuck with my own system. I have designed it so that it does exactly what I want and in the way that I want it.
NEVERTHELESS
I am more than happy to share the results of my work with other people. If there is anyone who has an interest in one or more of the families mentioned, then I will be happy to pass on what information I have (after pruning out most people who may still be living). They will just have to accept it in some form other than GEDCOM!!
