New Redway at McConnell Drive
Milton Keynes Council has consulted the Cycle Users' Group on the
possibility of a Redway (Cycle Track) along McConnell Drive in Wolverton.
This would increase access for cyclists and pedestrians from Wolverton
to the estates to the south. At the south end
[map]
it will join with the existing Redway near the Museum. This is a
lightly trafficed route and is hoped to cause little conflict.
There are options for the route to the north. Making the
connection at Moon Street
[map]
is seen and being particularly important as this
gives access to the residential area.
Linking the route to the Tesco store beyond point A is also
attractive but brings problems. The design of the junction
[map]
which leads into Church Street is particularly difficult. There is a
significant amount of traffic using the route C-B which means that
northbound cyclists at E would need to look behind them to give way
properly. If they were routed onto the road at this point, with a
sweep to the kerb to the left then the conflict could be avoided. Cyclists
southbound at D would have a more significant problem. This could
be helped by leaving the cyclists on the road at this
point and providing a refuge to help them cross into point E.
The route is along an existing road and width is limitted. The suggesting
of only surfacing a 2 metre strip in the 4 metre verge may be a little
tight given that the relaxed standard for cycle track provision
is 3 metres and full facilities at least 3.5 metres. In any case, the
Council will need to careful to provide clearance from high vegitation
to the west.
