Redway Cleaning
|
from Ian, Mike, Barry and Alan. . .
Dear MKC Cycling Officer,
The 252570 Redway reporting number seems to be continuously engaged these
days. Is it possible to get a message through about glass in two
underpasses?
I reported these two sites over two weeks ago and nothing has been done.
1. The underpass nearest to the miniature railway under the V10/H6
roundabout near Willen Lake.
2. The underpass under the H7 Chaffron Way grid road on the Redway
joining the two sections of the old Newport Road from Woolstones to
Woughton next to the Ouzel Vally Park.
Assuming these services are carried out by contractors, is there any
criteria assigned to successful completion of these jobs, i.e is there a
certain response time in which they should be carried out and some sort
of inspection carried out afterwards to check that it has been
satisfactorily cleaned ?
The carrying out of the Redway cleaning to a decent standard would seem
to be very important to successful encouragement of cycling, as no one's
going to bother to use the Redways if they are seldom cleaned and strewn
with glass.
Anyone else had similar problems??
Ian Norman
I reported glass at two locations in mid September.
One (by MK Museum here in Wolverton) was cleared, but the other and the
large lump of concrete near the first site remained. I re-reported in late Sept.
Then I spoke to a highways maintenance engineer directly - (I didn't
bother with 252570 as I knew it would be engaged with rubbish and
recycling queries) - since I did not know if they or cleansing had been
given the concrete lump report.
You might get a speedier response if you copy your e-mail to Andy
Hudson, Head of Infrastructure, Environment Directorate, MKC. His
department contains Waste Resources, Landscape & Countryside, Transport
& Infrastructure Support (i.e. Allotments, Bus Cards & Abandoned
Vehicles), and Energy Management. His e-mail address will be
. His direct phone number is 252577.
I accept that, regardless of other (legal duty) considerations,
MKC are likely to be operating a priority system on reported defects of
all kinds. It would be twofold beneficial to transport campaigners if
they shared the ratings system criteria with us. Operationally we could
observe whether the response time was consistent with their written
priority rating and remedial systems. Strategically we might wish to
lobby for changes to some of the priority gradings.

Never mind about the combination of leaf litter, branches and shortly the
likelyhood of ice liable to cause a spill especially in the dark. At the
start of the month I was cycling home when I was suddenly woken up by a
sharp jolt which nearly toppled me. The following day I discovered the the
cause was almost certainly a 4 to 6 inch deep hole in the cycleway. This had
been left by the contractors to the substation by the railway at Bradwell
Abbey. I have been meaning to report this, but finally, some action has been
taken. A traffic cone has now been placed in it! The following weekend, I was
on a gentle ride around the city and on the approach to a canal bridge
started to apply power when the left handlebar started to twist and lift up.
If I had been braking or going up a steep hill, I may well have had a serious
injury. The bars were steel. The chronology would suggest that that pothole
may have seriously weakened the handlebars. Any donations you may be tempted
to offer should be sent to The Red Tarmac Fund c/o Environment Directorate
CMK.

I too cycled into that one, late one night in the dark. I reported it to MK
Council about a week ago. I hope that it will result in more than a traffic
cone.
