2961 miles Round the Midsummer Block
|
Anne Hannam, MK Cycle Safety Officer, writes...
On Wednesday 21st June, Midsummer's Day, Milton Keynes joined in the UK-wide celebrations marking the public opening of over 5,000 miles of National Cycle Network.
The 'longest ride' on the longest day took place and 'RIDE THE BLOCK 2000' was Milton Keynes' main event. The event was based on Midsummer Boulevard which runs through the heart of Milton Keynes and forms part of the National Cycle Network, Route 51.
The event was sponsored by Abbey National Sports and Social Club, Milton Keynes Council and Horizon Radio.
All local cyclists were encouraged to take part and to ride at least one lap of the circuit, with a target of 5 laps - equivalent to 4 miles. There was tremendous response and 2961 miles was clocked up. 159 local cyclists took part. Everyone who entered received a certificate and entry to a prize draw.
Some of those taking part, like Mayor Alf Woodcock, clocked up miles on stationary bicycles outside Abbey National and the station.
Nine pupils from Bushfield Middle School cycled one lap of the circuit after cycling in to the City Centre from Wolverton to receive their individual Certificates for completion of the Milton Keynes Council Child Cyclist Awareness Course.
During the afternoon there was a stunt-cycling exhibition on Station Square.
