Roundabout Risks
|
Ian Norman recounts a recent problem with roundabout visibility...
I very nearly experienced a brown trouser situation this morning on my
daily commute to work. It was crossing the Newport Pagnell bypass at the
roundabout on the dual carriageway A422, heading for Willen.
The worst scenario, I was brought to a dead stop at the give way line in
rather a high gear because of traffic and proceeded to start when the
coast was clear, only to get half way across the first exit when a car
appeared at high speed from the blind side of the roundabout. How he
missed me I don't know, I was only glad there wasn't a car behind me to
complicate matters.
I guess he hadn't foreseen or planned for a cyclist on the road!
The ability to see across these larger roundabouts is bad coupled with
vehicles been driven too fast for the drivers vision. Vehicles approach
roundabouts these days with the intention of not stopping, instead of
approaching with the ability to stop and driving on if the way is clear.
There but for the grace of God . . . . . .
