GAPS AT WITAN GATE
|
Kevin Jory - Feb 2001
We have reported previousely on the removal of central
reservation gaps and the desire to grant exceptions for
cyclists. One example was the Fourth Street junction on
Midsummer Boulevard.
A further set of highway works has been inplemented on
Witan Gate which used not to have any hard divider between
the two directions of traffic. Motor vehicles exiting the
car parks onto this road now need to turn left as seen in
the picture. Cyclists can still go ahead towards the parking
area opposite or to turn right on the other side of the gap.
The road markings seem to be better than those at Fourth Street
(shown here) which do not have the cycle lane.
The detail gives the opportunity to cycle into the gap at
an angle which allows the cyclist to clear the carriageway
quickly.
