CYCLE-FRIENDLY ROUNDABOUT
|
from Michael Evans. . .
Reading your summer edition of Cycle User, I see you picked up the
roundabout issue in Bournemouth and Weymouth. You might
like to know something of the background.
When the local authorities decided to put in cycle lanes around the
periphery of the roundabouts, they did not consult us or the CTC. We could
have saved them a lot of money if they had! Neither did they consult us when
they took them out, even though we have Cycle Forums meeting regularly. So
much for consultation!
However, in Wimborne, where I live I was consulted in July on the redesign
of a small roundabout, and the result is in our Summer Newsletter which you
can find on our website, including a sketch plan. The new design puts
cyclists who intend to go straight on or turn right at the roundabout in the
centre of the carriageway, not on the periphery where it might be assumed by
drivers that they are taking the next exit, which is what caused most of the
accidents at Bournemouth and Weymouth.
We are watching the new Wimborne layout with interest, but our County
cycling officer told me last week that so far no accidents have been
reported there, compared with 11 over the previous 2 years.
Yours sincerely, Michael Evans QPM BA (Chairman DCN)
