A disembodied and mutually telepathic collective intelligence with an affinity for plastic. The Nestenes travelled as portions of intelligence, each lacking an individual identity, in spherical plastic energy units. Ruthlessly aggressive, the Nestenes colonised other worlds with showers of these spheres, led by a swarm leader. At first a small group would land and prepare for invasion, creating plastic Autons to await the arrival of the main shower, tracing the sphere's pulsating homing signals.
Once all the spheres had been collected a physical plastic octopus-like body would be created for the combined Nestene conciousness and colonisation would begin. Such a plan was carried out on Earth after the Nestene Conciousness set up shop in a plastics factory and began the manufacture of deadly Autons.
Although defeated, a single Nestene energy unit survived on Earth, bringing the Conciousness into contact with The Master. Ensconced in yet another factory, The Master, in league with the Nestene Conciousness, unleashed the Autons upon Humanity once again, using virtually anything made of plastic to kill.
After having it's food stock destroyed in a war which saw it's protein planets rotted the Nestene Conciousness returned to Earth, drawn by all the tasty smoke, oil, toxins and dioxins generated by Mankind. Taking the form of a large vat of liquid plastic, it infiltrated the planet by means of warp shunt technology and prepared once again to destroy Humanity.
Vulnerable to anti-plastic, the Conciousness set up a large transmitter from which it could send out control signals, projecting life into any plastic item, including new Auton dummy footsoldiers. When ready, the main activation signal would be transmitted and distributed via relays, unleashing a terrible tide of plastic killers to do the bidding of the Nestene Conciousness.
