Place of Origin: Skaro
Description:
The Thals were one of the two warring civilisations on Skaro, fighting a thousand year war with the Kaleds. Like their enemies they fought themselves to the point of collapse as shortages forced them to turn from laser weapons and synthetic webbing to antiquated muskets and animal skins.
While the Kaleds developed deadly machine creatures, the Thals sought to break the deadlock by building a missle designed to destroy the Kaled city and hence the majority of the Kaled population. Loaded by Kaled and Muto slaves, the Thals launched this missle, confident of success thanks to the treachery of a high-ranking Kaled scientist.
The war finally ended following the detonation of a neutron bomb that turned what was left of their planet into a sterile world of mutants and petrified forests. The Thals were forced to scrape a living on the blasted surface, slowly mutating full circle from their original humanoid form into a race of 'perfect' Aryans.
A far cry from the warriors of Thal history, these people were simple pacifistic farmers who cultivated small plots of fertile land on a distant plateaux. However years of low rainfall forced them to abandon their homes and search for food in the Dalek city, blissfully unaware of what lurked within.
The Thals somehow survived the Dalek's rise to power, remaining on Skaro while their enemies left to exterminate their way to empire. Generations after the Doctor's visit to Skaro, his exploits had passed into legend as the Thals developed space travel and built primitive spacecraft. Using this new technology the Thals embarked on a desperate attempt to attack the Daleks.
Locating the Daleks on Spiridon, they sent what was effectively a suicide mission to destroy a Dalek research base. The stakes were raised considerably when a Dalek transmission was intercepted and the Thals learned that there were far more Daleks on Spiridon than anyone could imagine.
