FRANCE BY MOTORCYCLE - Page 1

Having toured France at every available opportunity over the last 12 years by motorcycle and car, both with companions and by myself I have tried to put together a site that may be of inspiration to others. The main aim of this site is recount my experiences, whilst touring France on a motorcycle and to offer advise and useful hints and tips.

France being such a large country and so diverse, no two areas are the same, from the lush green of the north to the parched almost desert of the south.

I am by no means an expert on the country what I shall attempt to do is to give an account of my own experiences mention places of interest and roads that would appeal to motorcyclists.

Crossing the channel is best left to the individual, short or long, day or night, having used them all, my own preference is Portsmouth Cherbourg overnight.

France is a very biker friendly country, accommodation is very reasonable from £13.00 for 2 people a night at the present rate of exchange, as is eating out. As for camping, basic campsites such as camping a la ferme (on the farm) are usually less than a £1 a night strangely enough the prices never seem to vary right across the country. Chains of hotels are everywhere these include Mr Bed and B&B, the various levels of the Logis de France and the basic but clean Formula 1, all are superb.

I am amazed that so few motorcycles ever venture across the channel, why I don’t know, the roads are superb. Be sure to learn a few basic words, be polite and the French will make you welcome, you will be a hero in every village cafe. The car drivers warn of police and even they turn a blind eye unless you are being really silly.
