Imperial crown within an open wreath entwined with an inscribed ribbon. Inscription around on a border. 44mm (BHM2838, Eimer 1593) Holed as normal and extremely fine. £30 (picture) The Reform League was established in 1865 under the Presidency of Edmond Beales and was concerned with the suffrage of men and the ballot. In 1860 a new Bill for parliamentary reform was introduced but later withdrawn. Public demonstrations took place in Trafalgar Square and Hyde Park. Disraeli was succesful in introducing the Reform Bill to the House in 1867

The prize is awarded biennially for a paper on a scientific subject presented to the Society.

MB821 Samuel Parr A bronze medal 1821 by B.R.Faulkner and G, Clarke for Mudie. Bare head of Samuel Parr left, inscription around. Rev. An inscribed open book, inscription around. 41mm (BHM1160) Good very fine. £45 (picture) Samuel Parr (1747-1825), Son of a Harrow apothecary, educated at Harrow and Emmanuel College Cambridge. Parr became first assistant master at Harrow and being offended at not receiving the Headmastership, began a rival school at Stanmore. This venture did not prosper and some years later Parr became headmaster of Norwich Grammar School. In 1783 Parr undertook the care of two curacies in Norwich and in 1785 he moved to Hatton in Warwickshire where he built a library which eventually contained 10,000 volumes. After his death the library was dispersed by auction in 1828. It is possible that the medal was struck to mark the 50th anniversary of his admission to Doctor of Laws at Cambridge in 1781.

Noted for his desire to improve conditions in prisons. He visited many prisons in Europe and in Britain and published his 'State Of Prisons' in 1777. Died of camp fever whilst with the Russian army at Kherston.

The Statistical Society of London was established on 15th March 1834 for the purpose of arranging and publishing 'facts calculated to illustrate the condition and prospects of society.
