Match Report

Today saw two new faces to the familiar line up - Andy Castle who has replaced the promoted Nigel Forshew for this season, and a new addition, Rosemary Chatterton making her veteran debut.  With Steve driving it meant that there was plenty of time for team members to get to know each other and, as with all the Hereford teams with which I have played team spirit and camaraderie was soon established.

On the table Andy opened up the day with a win over the opposing number 2 Andy Boucher three straight -6, -4 & -7 with a very controlled style of play.  Next up was Brian who took on a very tricky Jim Stevenson a player that used pimples on the forehand and then attacked with them.  Despite being close through each game Brian’s opponent was able to convert at the crucial end and won three straight 7, 7 & 7.   With the match score at 1-1 Steve took on the Somerset number 2 David Adeniji.  His style was too strong in the first with David winning game 8.  The coaching from Andy Castle in between games was the key and Steve took the next three games to, -9, -7 & -9 to take the match score to 2-1 to Hereford.  Next the first mixed doubles with Rosemary & Andy Castle taking on Wendy & Andy Boucher and in a tight first game the Somerset pair got the advantage to win game 10.  After a mid game talk Rosemary showed more consistency in her returns which meant Andy could trust his partner and pick winning shots that were there rather than having to force the issue.  This was the key and the pattern for the remainder of this set with Hereford clinching the next three games to -6, -9 & -8.  Hereford now 3-1 up and Rosemary’s contribution in the doubles was significant.  Game 5, Brian against Andy and our man took the first -9.  A change in something and Brian missed timed a lot of his hits and suddenly had lost the next two game5 & 5.  He looked to be out of it but once again Mr Castle the coach came to the rescue with advice that was followed to the letter.  Instant result Brian took the 4th game to -2 & the fifth to -8, putting Hereford in strong position at 4-1.  The ladies singles was Rosemary’s first individual challenge and she acquitted herself well even though she lacked a bit of confidence (How many of you remember the first time you wore the County shirt and had all the feelings that went with it?).  Her opponent Wendy was determined and consistent and proved too strong running out winner three straight 3, 6, & 1.  Most importantly there were positive signs for Rosemary to take away ready for the next occasion. Match score now at 4-2 in Hereford’s favour.

Men’s doubles saw Andy & Steve take on Jim & David.  The Hereford pair won, -2, -8 & -5.  Andy took the leading role which helped Steve’s confidence too.  Match score 5-2 Hereford.

Next men’s single Steve took on the forehand pimples of Jim and took the first two games -9 & -5 and looked in control.  Jim had other ideas and took the next two games to 6 & 10.  Andy the coach stepped in for Steve and by following the plan Steve won the fifth to -9.  (Thanks Andy although a fault serve by Jim, followed by a net for me at 9-9 really clinched it!).  Match now won with 6 for Hereford took the pressure off.  Andy stepped up to take on David and with again, much control and spin won three straight -8, -8, & -3.  The final mixed doubles was Rosemary and Brian against Wendy & Jim and once again the unorthodox pimple forehand caused a lot of problems for Hereford.  A good game but always one that looked like Somerset would take which they did 7, 5, & 6.

Final score was Hereford 7, Somerset 3, a reversal of last year’s result.

As always it was a pleasure for me to organise the team and necessary arrangements to represent the County.  My thanks to the team for the way in which they conducted and presented themselves when representing the County.

Whilst today was a great team effort with everyone contributing to the result I would like to thank Rosemary for agreeing to step in and play and Andy who was extremely influential in the result with his play, coaching & confidence building.

Finally, now that we know Rosemary is a former English teacher my apologies if the tense changes and the grammar, punctuation and spelling are poor.

Thanks Steve Brown.

COUNTY TABLE TENNIS RESULTS on 11 Feb 2012

Veteran Division 4D

Diasapponting day: Lost 8-2 to Devon 2nd. Small report as below.

Hereford 3rd travelled to Oakhampton to play Devon 2nd in their 4th fixture. With 2 wins and a loss from previous games hopes were high for today. The Devon team had slightly unothodox styles but, all of them very effective with their games. Even though Andy and Brian got Hereford off to a good start at 2-1 after 3 games, both winning their opening singles, that was the final score for Hereford. A close men’s doubles offered a glimmer of hope when Hereford were 4-2 down, but with Devon coming through winners in 5 sets for the match score at 5-2, it proved to be too much for Hereford to claw back. Both Brian and Andy had good second games with some high tempo table tennis from Andy entertaining us all in his game against Kevin Nicholls the Devon no. 1, but to no avail.

Thank you to the team for turning out and travelling such a long way for a single match. As always when representing the County they were all polite and well presented.

Steve Brown.
