locals have entered to try their skills against the best. It’s free to watch.
At last there is news on the battle
between Warwickshire and Herefordshire 1st for the title race in the Veterans
County Championships division 3D. Herefordshire had been trailing Warwickshire
on game difference, by only a single game after January results. I can now
happily report that Herefordshire are in FIRST place with 11 points, with
Warwickshire in second after they were held to a draw by Hampshire 3rd.
Final matches are on 2nd April when
Warwickshire face Gloucestershire at third place, while Herefordshire face
Glamorgan at seventh place at the bottom, still looking for a win. This match
will be held at Green Farm with a likely start of 4 PM.
HEREFORDSHIRE
SENIOR COUNTY TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
held on 6th March at Whitecross School, Hereford
On Sunday at Whitecross School, the Herefordshire County Table Tennis Senior

Whitecross School, Hereford together with the semi-finals and final of the
Men's’ Singles and four Veteran finals competed for a fortnight ago and three
junior and cadet events played on the same day.
Mark Owens’s return to the Championships after a two-year break saw him
progress to the semi-finals but not as easily as he might usually expect.
Mark Stubbs took the first game 11.8 and although Mark took the next
three by 5, 5 and 7 Mark admitted than none of the games were easy. He
then met Alistair Dawson who also won the first game to 9, but Mark stepped up
a gear and won by 6, 5 and 5 in a very good match. The holder of the
title, Chris Martin, is also through to the semis by beating Greg Price in a
very well fought game by the junior player with a scoreline of 9, 6, -8 and 7.
Chris then met Richard Smith and won with a scoreline of 7, 2, 7.
The centre part of the draw saw No. 3 seed, Dave White beat John Hunt 3,

Oliver by -5, 10, -6, 11 and 9.
The Audrey Lawrence Handicap Singles final was between Mark Farr and Jon Dyke.
Over the four games played up to 11 points, Jon had to give Mark 28
points and Mark won by just 6 points.
Chris Martin who started each of his games at - 10 won the Jacko Memorial

Herefordshire County Table Tennis Championships
HEREFORDSHIRE SENIOR COUNTY TABLE
TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Finals held on 18th March at Whitecross High School Main Hall
Whitecross School Main Hall was the setting on Friday
evening for the Herefordshire County Herefordshire County Table Tennis
Championships
.A good number
of spectators were treated to a very good standard of play from players of all
ages
The Men’s semi-finals were played
between Chris Martin, last year¹s winner, who beat Steve Knight by 7, 7 and 6
and Mark Owen, who beat Dave White by 8, 9 and 6. In the final, played as the best of seven games, Chris battled
valiantly but every different method he tried was countered by Mark who
eventually won by 6, 7, 4 and 6 to put his name on the trophy for the twenty
first time since he first won the title in 1977.
Mark was also on the table with his
sister, Lin Ashman, in the Mixed Doubles final and narrowly lost by 12.10 in
the third game to Dave White and Ann Barnes who were playing together in the
competition for the first time.
His third appearance of the evening
was when Mark partnered Andy Castle in the Men’s Doubles. This time they met
Chris Martin and Steve Brown and a match much closer than the score suggests
which was won by Mark and Andy by 3, 8, -8 and 3.
The Ladies Singles match was between
Ann Barnes and Margaret Shock. Ann won
by 4, 6 and 9 which means that a new name goes on the Ladies Cup and Ann was
partnered by Sue Segust, another new partnership, in the Ladies Doubles against
Margaret Shock and Lin Ashman with Ann and Sue winning by 6, 4 and 4.
The longest and most exciting match
of the evening was the Restricted Open for both men and women who have never
won the main events. Harry Jutle played
Lincoln Franklin. A spectator arriving during the first game might have thought
that they were playing to the old rule of 21 up, because it ended with Lincoln
winning by 20-18. Harry won the next
two games by 10 and 9 but lost the fourth by 9. In the final game Harry took the title by 5.
The other restricted event for
players not in the top ten positions in the Hereford League was between
Alistair Dawson and Trevor Davies and was equally entertaining. Alistair won
