Mike Wheatley kicked us off against Ian Chislett but looked uncomfortable to lose his first singles in straight sets. He glued another bat for his second singles and while the first game was tentative he won it at deuce against Steve Lewis, but then as his game improved so his opposition waned for Mike to win the next two easily for the straight sets win. Bob Trimble won his first singles also in straight sets against Steve, middle one at deuce, but seemed to have the upper hand in the second match against Mike Hurley only to lose it in the 4th set, last 2 at deuce. Harry struggled in his first singles against Mike’s serves, but fought back to catch-up, only to lose it at deuce. He did take one game easily, but lost in the 4th set. In his second singles again there were some outstanding rallies, but the net seemed to be against him to lose it in the 5th set against Ian. Carol and Bob Trimble lost the first mixed doubles in straight sets to Mike and Ann Sandford. Carol in her singles against Ann lost the first, but then played really well to win in the 4th set. Harry and Mike in the Men’s doubles lost the first, won the second, then should have won the third at 10-6 up, only to lose it 14-16, but then won the next two at 11-8 against Ian and Steve. Title Race

At last there is news on the battle between Warwickshire and Herefordshire 1st for the title race in the Veterans County Championships division 3D. Herefordshire had been trailing Warwickshire on game difference, by only a single game after January results. I can now happily report that Herefordshire are in FIRST place with 11 points, with Warwickshire in second after they were held to a draw by Hampshire 3rd.

Final matches are on 2nd April when Warwickshire face Gloucestershire at third place, while Herefordshire face Glamorgan at seventh place at the bottom, still looking for a win. This match will be held at Green Farm with a likely start of 4 PM.

HEREFORDSHIRE SENIOR COUNTY TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Finals held on 18th March at Whitecross High School Main Hall

Whitecross School Main Hall was the setting on Friday evening for the Herefordshire County Herefordshire County Table Tennis Championships

.A good number of spectators were treated to a very good standard of play from players of all ages

The Men’s semi-finals were played between Chris Martin, last year¹s winner, who beat Steve Knight by 7, 7 and 6 and Mark Owen, who beat Dave White by 8, 9 and 6.  In the final, played as the best of seven games, Chris battled valiantly but every different method he tried was countered by Mark who eventually won by 6, 7, 4 and 6 to put his name on the trophy for the twenty first time since he first won the title in 1977.

Mark was also on the table with his sister, Lin Ashman, in the Mixed Doubles final and narrowly lost by 12.10 in the third game to Dave White and Ann Barnes who were playing together in the competition for the first time.

His third appearance of the evening was when Mark partnered Andy Castle in the Men’s Doubles. This time they met Chris Martin and Steve Brown and a match much closer than the score suggests which was won by Mark and Andy by 3, 8, -8 and 3.

The Ladies Singles match was between Ann Barnes and Margaret Shock.  Ann won by 4, 6 and 9 which means that a new name goes on the Ladies Cup and Ann was partnered by Sue Segust, another new partnership, in the Ladies Doubles against Margaret Shock and Lin Ashman with Ann and Sue winning by 6, 4 and 4.

The longest and most exciting match of the evening was the Restricted Open for both men and women who have never won the main events.  Harry Jutle played Lincoln Franklin. A spectator arriving during the first game might have thought that they were playing to the old rule of 21 up, because it ended with Lincoln winning by 20-18.  Harry won the next two games by 10 and 9 but lost the fourth by 9.  In the final game Harry took the title by 5.

The other restricted event for players not in the top ten positions in the Hereford League was between Alistair Dawson and Trevor Davies and was equally entertaining. Alistair won the first game easily to 5 but then dropped the next two to 9 and 8.  The fourth game could have gone either way but went to Alistair at 9 and he then won the fifth by 2.

The Grade B final for players in the Hereford 2nd Division, was played between Bob Atyeo and Colin Dolding who both play for the Crackpots team. Colin won the first two by 8 and 3 but Bob came back to win the third by 9 and then Colin won the fourth by 7.

The Cadet and Junior events were all between members of the Farr and Price families.  Josh Price beat Oliver Farr by 5, 9 and 4 in the Cadet boys match and Josh played his brother older Greg in the Boys Singles and having dropped the first game by 6 went on to take the second by 8 and only narrowly lost the third by 12-10 and Greg won the title by 5 in the fourth. Greg and Josh won the Boys Doubles by beating Oliver and Mark Farr by 5, 4 and 7.

The Veterans matches proved to be a good evening for Mike Wheatley.  He had a very long and high scoring set with Harry Jutle in the Singles, eventually winning by 4, 9, -8, -10 and 11.  He also had a five

game match in the Super Veteran’s event with Norman Merchant in spite of playing catch up for two games.  The score was -8, 9, -8, 5, 9. In the Veterans Doubles Mike was partnered by Harry Jutle and the games went first to Harry & Mike by 5 and then alternately to their opposition of Paul Coleman and Bob Trimble by 9, to them by 8, against them by 9 and in the fifth game they won by 6.

Paul Coleman was in play again in the Restricted Veteran’s Singles with Colin Dolding and this time Paul won by 8, 8 and 9.
