HEREFORDSHIRE COUNTY TABLE TENNIS
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Whitecross School,
Hereford,
Sunday 19th March 2006
The sports hall at Whitecross School
was a hive of activity from 8 30 a.m. until 6,30p.m. on Sunday, when 48 players
competed in eleven different events.
Play was on ten tables and all of them were in use until well after 5
p.m. Four of the events were played
through to a finish, others to the finals and the men’s singles to the
semi-finals. These matches will all be
played at Whitecross
School on Friday
evening (24th) starting at 7 p.m. when spectators are welcome and admission will be
free.
Aiming to put his name for the 22nd time on the Men’s Singles trophy
that he first won in 1977 will be Mark Owen. As the top seed he won his way through to the
semi-finals in straight sets. He will
meet Dave White the 3rd seed who had a tough four game
first round match with Josh Price but then had two straight set wins. In the bottom half of the draw Chris Martin, No. 2 seed, had to withdraw due to
injury and the 4th seed, Toby Eckley lost his first match to Andy Castle. Andy went on to reach the semis and newcomer to the
County, Ola Andersson, who had a five game win over Roland Close and another
over Bob Trimble, will be a very interesting semi-final.
Last year’s winner, Ann Barnes and Sue
Segust will be the Lady’s finalists and these two players will team up to
defend their Ladies’ Doubles title against Carol Milnes and Margaret
Shock. Mark Owen
and Andy Castle will team up for the
Men’s Doubles final against David White
and Simon
Morgan, who beat the No.2
seeds in the first round. Ann and
Sue and David and Mark will again be
on opposite sides of the net for the Mixed Doubles final. Ann will be partnered by Dave and Sue by Mark.
Top seed in the event for anyone who has not won the main
titles, the Restricted Open Singles, Lincoln Franklin, lost his first match
against Ola Andersson, who has gone on to reach the final and second seed, Nigel Forshew, went through reasonably comfortably
to reach the same stage. The other
restricted Singles event for anyone excluding the top 10 players will be
another final between Nigel and Ola.
The competition for Second Division players, the Grade ‘B’,
saw all the seeded players reaching the semi finals. At this stage both the top seeds fell – Richard Maddrell losing to Paul Smyth in four games
and Steve Halford beating Ian Cooper
in five.
For the first time this year there was a consolation
competition for first round losers in the Grade ‘B’ and James Palmer beat
Margaret Shoch in the final
The remaining events were all played through to the
finish. In the Audrey Lawrence Handicap Simon Morgan
beat Nigel Foreshew in the final and
in the Jacko Memorial Handicap Ann Barnes on +3 beat Ola Andersson on 0 by 18
and 14.
The closest matches of the day were in the Handicap
Doubles. In this event all competitors
are placed in seeding order and draw from the top and bottom places for
pairings. This is bound to give close
results and out of the 11 matches played one went to five, seven to four and
only three to three games. In the final Dave White and Margaret Shock beat Simon Morgan
and James Palmer by 8, 11 and 8.

Report from Cicely
Palmer – 01684 540 595 or cis@forwil.co.uk
March 24, 2006
On Friday night the County Table Tennis
Championships were played at Whitecross School,
when Mark Owen was aiming to win his
22nd Men’s Singles title.
He first had to win through the semi-final
against Dave White and it certainly
did not go according to plan. Dave won the first two games
by 8 and 7 and at 10.8 he had two match points
before Mark pulled back to 10 all. At 12.11 in Mark’s favour the
umpire thought that
one of Mark’s smashes had missed the table but
was corrected by both players that the ball had in fact just clipped the edge
giving the
game to Mark by 13.11. Sporting gestures
like this do not happen often in sports but they do in table
tennis. Mark then stepped up
his game to win the next two games to 3 and 3.
The other semi-final was between Andy Castle and newcomer to the County scene, Ola
Andersson. The first two games were close and of a high standard with Andy winning closely by 10 and 9 but in the third
game Ola lost to 3.
This brought the close friends and long
standing adversaries on the table, Mark and Andy,
together for the best of 7 games final. Mark
won the first two games by 4 and 7 and in the
third game Andy took control to lead
by quite a large amount before clinching it at
12.10. Mark then won the next game to 5
and had a tougher fight in the fifth to win by the closest of margins 11.9.
The sixty plus
spectators who stayed to watch the final were
certainly not disappointed.
Ola Andersson featured in two other matches –
the finals of both the restricted singles events. He also faced Nigel Forshew each time.
In the first, Nigel
won comparatively easily by 7, 6 and 1 but later in the evening roles were
reversed and a much closer contest ended by
Ola winning by 7, 5 and 9
Andy Castle and Mark Owen were partners in the Men’s Doubles against
Dave White and Simon Morgan
and won by 4, 9 and 11.
On the Ladies’ side of the events Ann Barnes
and Sue Segust were in all
three. They partnered each other against Carol Milnes and
Margaret Shock in a five set match, dropping
the first and third games but winning the fifth by 5. In the mixed
doubles Ann was
partnered by Dave White
and Sue by Mark
Owen. Winning this match in three straight games, 8, 5
and 7, was some consolation for Dave. In the Ladies’ final Sue won the first game to 6 but then Ann took charge
and won the next three by 2, 6 and 2.
The Veteran’s Singles was between Roland Close
– another newcomer to the County, and Harry Jutle – a past title holder.
A good
standard from both players ended with a win
for Harry by 9, 8 and 6. Harry also played in the Veteran’s doubles
with Mike Wheatley
against Dave Hamer and David Knowles.
Harry and Mike dropped the first game to 8 and the third to 10 but fought well
in the last two
games to win by 3 and 1. The restricted
Vets Singles was won by Roland Close who beat Richard
Maddrell by 3, 12 and 8. The Super
Vets Singles had Dave Hamer in action again,
this time against Bob Trimble. Bob lost the first two games to 6 and was
match point down
in the third before winning it by 12.10.
He then won the last two by 6 and 5.
Paul Smyth won the Grade ‘B’ Singles 11.5,
12.10, 8.11 and 11.6.
The Cadets Singles was very close, even though
it was only three games. Greg Davenport beat Jethro Richards by 12.10, 16.14 and 11.5.
Josh Price won the Junior Title by beating
Alex Riley 4, 9 and 11 and he also won the Boys Doubles with Will Hawley by
very consistently
holding their opponents, Wilson Kung and Richard Jones, to 6, 6 and 6.
