The Herefordshire
County Table Tennis Championships were played at Queen
45 men and women took
part and played in ten different events.
In the Men’s Singles
the four seeded players all reached the semi-final stage, which along with the final, will be played on
Friday night at Bromyard. Mark Owen,
seeded No.1 and attempting to win his 23rd title in the event,
dropped his opening game to Nick Price but then went on to win all his other
games. The No.2 seed, Ola Andersson also
dropped just one game on his way through, but this was in the quarter final
against Greg Price. Chris Martin had
three straight game wins but Toby Eckley was given a tough five game set at the
same stage, eventually winning by 1, -9, -7, 10 and 10 against Alistair
Dawson. These two players complete the
semi-final line up.
There were only four
ladies competing for their singles title and Ann Barnes, defending her title
for the third time, will be playing Carol Milnes in the final on Friday night.
In the Restricted Open
event both top seeds won through to the final and No.1 seed, Ola Andersson took
all his in straight games.
The other Restricted
Singles – for anyone excluding the top ten players – saw the No.2 seed, Harry
Jutle, win through but only after two four game sets, one of just 3 games and
the semi-final, against Roland Close, going to him by 5, -7, 6, -7 and 8. The No.1 seed Alistair Dawson had two wins in
straight games before bowing out to Bob Trimble with a score of 6, -6, 5 and 8.
In the Men’s Doubles
Mark Owen and his partner, Andy Castle won their way through reasonable
comfortably to the final stage but the No.2 seeds, Nigel Foreshew and Lincoln
Franklin, after winning against James Palmer and Colin Dolding by -9, 6, 6 and
12 in the quarter final, lost to Ola Andersson and Toby Eckley by 7, -9, -6 and
-5.
The Ladies’ Doubles
event is a straight final on Friday between Carol Milnes & Margaret Shock
and Ann Barnes & Sue Segust. All
these ladies featured in the Mixed Doubles and Ann and her partner, Dave White,
will be meeting Carol and Nigel Foreshew on Friday evening in the final.
Four events were
played through to a finish on Sunday and notable amongst these were the Audrey
Lawrence Memorial Handicap where players get handicapped at each stage. The Handicapper, Simon Morgan, did an
excellent job. Of the 28 matches played
over four games of up to 11 points, 19 were won by 4 points or less, 12 of
these by 3 or less and two of them by just a single point. The final saw Nigel Foreshew win over Chris
Martin by 3 points.
The Grade ‘B’ Singles
for second division players only, had some very close matches. In the semi-finals Bob Marshall beat junior player,
Jonathon Bacon, by the closest margin of the day -10, 10, 10 and 9 and Stephen
Katona beat Margaret Shock by 8, 2, -9, -11 and 9. In a close final Bob won by -9, 9, 6 and 8.
For those knocked out
in the first round of the ‘B’ competition there is a consolation singles. More than half the matches needed extra games
and three went to five. Junior player
Ben Davis had a really good run through to the final but he then lost to James
Palmer.
The Handicap Doubles
competition is always a close one as the ‘handicap’ is the draw for partners on
a ranking basis. Thirteen matches were
played and only two were won in straight games and five went to a fifth
game. The mixture of experience and
youth give all the games a great spirit and they are greatly enjoyed by all
those taking part. James Palmer and Bob
Marshall beat Dave White and Willem Taylor in the final.
Other finals to be
played on Friday will be the Veteran Singles and Doubles, the Super Veterans
Singles, the Boys’ Singles and their Doubles.
Unfortunately the Cadet Singles cannot be played as Edward Martin has a
broken toe but another player will act as a substitute to give the other
finalist, Ben Davis the match he deserves.
All the matches and
presentations to other winners will be starting at 7 p.m. on 23rd
March at Queen Elizabeth’s School, Bromyard and spectators are welcome. Admission is free.

champions were defending their titles and five of them were losers.
The first title to be
defended was the Veterans’ Doubles.
Harry Jutle and Mike Wheatley had won for the last two years and played
Chris Martin and Dave Hamer who beat the title holders in three straight games
but only by the very narrow margin of 9,
8 and 9.
The next surprise was
in the Men’s Doubles where Andy Castle and Mark Owen, who had won the event for
the last three years, played Ola Andersson and Toby Eckley. Ola and Toby won the first game quite
comfortably to 7 but Mark and Andy took the second by 12.10. The third game again went against the title
holders to 6 but they again came back to take the fourth by 9. The fifth game had everyone in the hall on
the edges of their seats and you could have heard a pin drop as it was not
until after 11 all that Ola and Toby won the last two points to win the match.
The Super Veteran’s
Singles saw Mike Wheatley in action again and this time he defeated the
champion, Bob Trimble, in straight games by 5, 10 and 4.
Ann Barnes was
defending the title she had held for two years and played Carol Milnes, who,
although she has played in the County for many years has never managed to win
the top title. This was a really tough
match. Ann won the first game by 13.11
but Carol won the second by 7. Ann took
the third by 12.10 and lost the fourth to 8.
Again the fifth game was not only crucial but close and ended at
11.9 in
Carol’s favour and her name goes on the trophy for the first time.
Ann and Carol were
both involved in the Mixed Doubles and Ladies’ Doubles finals on the opposite
sides of the table. Ann was partnered by
Sue Segust and Carol by Margaret Shock in the Ladies’ event and Ann and Sue, as
holders, added a third successive win to their record but only by the narrowest
of margins, 11.9, 12.10 and 11.9.
Ann and Dave White
played Carol and Nigel Foreshew in the Mixed event and also made it three in a
row by winning 11.9, 11.7 and 11.4.
In the Junior Boys Singles
Josh Price won the title for the second time by beating Mark Farr by 7, 9 and
10. Mark and his twin brother, Oliver,
played in the Juniors Boys Doubles against another pair of twins – Christopher
and Jonathon Bacon. The Farr brothers
won by 7, -4, 8 and 6. I doubt that
there have been any other occasions in the County’s existence that two sets of
twins have played in a Junior final – or any other event.
One of the competitors
in the Cadet Singles had broken his toe since the earlier rounds so a substitute
player came along to give Ben Davis a game instead of a walk over. Huw Richards accounted for himself very well
by winning the third game by 9 but the fourth game ended his luck at 12.10.
The two restricted
events were both straight game wins. In
the first one Ola Andersson beat Lincoln Franklin and in the event that
excludes the top 10 players in the County, Harry Jutle won playing Bob Trimble.
Mike Wheatley was also
in the Veterans’ Singles final against Chris Martin. Chris won by 12.10, 11.3 and 13.11.
The evening started with the semi-finals of the Men’s Singles. Mark Owen was defending the title he had first won in 1977 and has won on another 21 occasions. He dropped his first game against Chris Martin but then won the next three reasonably comfortably. The other semi-final was between Toby Eckley and Ola Andersson which Ola won. The last match of the evening was the final of this event and the good crowd of spectators were treated to a high standard of table tennis. This final is played as the best of seven games. Ola won the first two by 5 and 9 but Mark then won the next two by 8 and 8 followed by Ola winning his third game by 8. In the sixth game it looked certain to be going to a seventh and deciding game with Mark 9.2 up but Ola kept the pressure up and forced errors from Mark and gradually the lead disappeared and from a seemingly hopeless position of being 4.10 down he won the game, the match and the title for the first time by 12.10.

The team
hoped to improve on the runners-up position achieved last 2 seasons, but a
change was forced to find a third player, with
the sudden
departure of Norman Merchant. In fact they achieved runners-up spot again despite the changes.
again and
our side was the only one to take the most games from them. Dave White excelled
in this division only dropping 2
games for an
average of 85.7%. Although Harry Jutle did not achieve the dizzy heights
reached last season, he still averaged 50%.
Carol Milnes
had 2 wins, although could have been more, but let some slip away from a
winning position. Brian Kitchener, although
new to the
County was thrown in at the deep end for our 1st double fixture. He
performed well but nerves and lack of sharpness got
the better
of him. For the rest of the season Paul Coleman stepped in to the team and
performed well to achieve an average of 40%.
As the 1st
team our strength also lies in the doubles with the mixed at 78.6% and the
men’s at 71.4%.

It must be
frustrating for our 3rd team to play well but still not a lot to show for it in
the results. Often when I receive the scores the
games are
very close but always goes against them. Bob Trimble failed to win a single
game and yet has had so many go to 5 and
deuce. Brian
Kitchener played regularly for this team and had 2 wins to achieve an average
of 20%. Again it could have been higher
had it not
been at the wrong end of the close encounters. The captain Dave Knowles again
has had close games but not been able
to convert
them to wins. Margaret Shock has had her best season with a singles win in
straight sets over Shirley Carroll to achieve an
average of
20%, and 2 mixed doubles with Brian and Bob. My thanks go to Gordon Stables for
stepping in at short notice to play away
against
County. They
had one less fixture to play as
