The team continued to improve and only missed the runners-up spot on
game difference to Glamorgan also on 10 points,
although winning the match against them. This is very impressive considering
they were under strength for 2 matches. Dave White had the highest average at
80%, up from 60%. Mark Owen also vastly improved to 78.6% from 57.1%. Chris
Martin on his return did very well at 50%. Helen Green also improved to achieve
57.1% from 50%. The team’s strength in doubles showed again with same
statistics as last season. Mike Morgan and Trevor Davies found the standard a
bit too high in this division, but my thanks to them for stepping in at short
notice.
New team members for next season are Ola Anderson and Michael Owens.

The team have really picked themselves up after
the disappointment of last season. Playing the last match they went in at 5th
position, but performed superbly, especially Sue Segust
to finish as runners-up! Harry Jutle returned to winning ways with an average
of 75% up from 42.9%. Nigel Foreshew in his maiden season performed
impressively achieving 66.7%. Steve Knight also finished at 66.7% up from
42.9%. Sue Segust
finished at 50% up from 40%. Nigel has strengthened the side as a strong
doubles player as well as a very good singles player. Partnering Harry in the
Men’s they won 4 out of 6 and most of mixed with Sue and Lin. Many thanks for
Lin to step in when Sue was unavailable and performed very well. With new players
becoming available the team should be stronger next season.

COUNTY TABLE TENNIS RESULTS on Saturday
10-Apr-2010
Veteran Division 4C
Harry
started off with a win in 3 sets against Alan Duke. Steve followed with a win
in 4 tight sets against Malcolm Phillips to make it 2-0. Nigel was unable to
penetrate the defence of Dino Cwrra
to lose it in 3 sets for 2-1. Steve and Sue broke their duck in the 1st
mixed doubles with their first win in 4 sets against Debbie Quinlivan
and Malcolm Phillips for a 3-1 lead. Steve won the first game against Alan
Duke, but then was unable to control the heavy spins to lose in 4 sets for the
score at 3-2. Sue dominated her singles
against Debbie to win it in 3 sets to increase the lead to 4-2. Harry and Nigel
lost the first and second at deuce in the men’s doubles against Dino and Alan.
But then fought back to force it into a 5th set decider, only to
eventually lose it in a close game for 4-3. Nigel proved to be too strong
against Malcolm to defeat him in 3 sets to increase the lead to 5-3. As Nigel,
Harry also was unable to penetrate Dino’s defence to
lose it in 3 sets for 5-4 beat. In final match, the 2nd mixed
doubles Nigel and Sue
lost the first at deuce, won the second, lost the third before
upping their play to win the next 2 comfortably for the 6-4 victory!

Reports
from Cicely Palmer,
At Bromyard Queen Elizabeth’s School.
In
spite of more overnight snow, making road conditions rather treacherous in
places, all 32 players from all corners of the County and some from Powys,
Worcestershire and Gloucestershire managed to arrived safely and on time for a

all the events the first rounds were played in round robin groups with winners
and runners up going forward to knock-out stages.
The
Veteran Singles group winners were Dave White, Michael Owens, Chris Martin,
Alan Salisbury, Trevor Davies, Nigel Foreshew, Harry Jutle and Steve
Knight. The biggest surprise of the day
was when Trevor Davies knocked out number 1 seed, Dave White by -2, -9, 12, 12
and 5 but the other three seeds, Owens, Martin and Salisbury, all won through
to the semi-finals where Martin beat Davies by 10, 6 and 3 and Owens, making a
welcome return after many years out of the game, beat Salisbury by 3, -5, 5, -9
and 5. The final, like the rest of the

From
9 a.m. to after 6 p.m.on Sunday saw a day of continuous table tennis
matches played at Queen Elizabeth School Bromyard
with forty one players competing for a total of
ten titles. Of these two were played to a finish but the rest,
together with those of the four Veteran and several Junior finals will be
played on Friday (26th March) at the same venue when admission will be free and
play will start at 7.30 prompt and spectators are very welcome.
Thirty
three men took part in the Men’s Singles and all the eight seeds won through to
the quarter finals with straight wins except for two sets. At this stage No.1 seed, Ola Andersson, beat Alan Salisbury by 11,8,-9 and 5, No 2 seed, Mark Owen, beat Lincoln Franklin
by 4,-9,3 and 6, No 3 seed, Michael Owens, beat Chris Martin by -10,6,5 and 9,
and No 5 seed, Dave White, beat Toby Eckley by 4,7 and 9. The Semi-finals will be played on Friday
night between Ola, the current holder of the title, and Michael and Dave and
Mark. Both Michael and Mark have played
in the finals – facing each other across the net on 15 occasions. Mark has won the title 23 times and Michael 6
times but Michael had several breaks in playing and last competed in the
championships in 2002.
The
Ladies’ Singles final will be played between Ann Barnes and Sue Segust and the Ladies Doubles will be a straight final
between Ann Barnes and Gillian Davies and Sue Segust
and Margaret Shock. The Mixed Doubles
final will be between Ann Barnes and Dave White, the holders, and Sue Segust and Chris Martin.
The
Men’s Doubles No 1 seeds, Ola Andersson and Toby
Eckley lost their first round match to Dave White and Alan Salisbury, who went
on to beat Chris and Adam Martin to reach the final. At the bottom of the draw Michael Owens and
Mark Owen had two four game sets and reached the final by beating Nigel
Foreshew and Lincoln Franklin by 9,-5,6 and 9.
The
Second Division players’ competition has the two seeded players
,Bob Marshall and Mark Conod, in the final and
the consolation part of this event was played to a finish and Huan Davies won by 6,4 and 9 over Dan Hughes.
The
Restricted Open Singles seeded players all won through to the quarter finals
except for one player who withdrew and again the top seeds played in the
semi-finals where Toby Eckley (1) beat Steve Knight (3) by 9,-8,-10,4 and 5 and
Lincoln Franklin (2) won by 11,-9,9 and 8 over Alan Salisbury.
The
Singles for players not in the league’s top 10 had a few upsets on the way but
by the semi finals the committee had got it right and Alan Salisbury (1) beat
Harry Jutle (3) and Steve Knight (2) lost to Mark Stubbs (4) but both these
matches were long five game sets.
The
Handicap Doubles event had, as should happen, some very close sets but the
final on Friday will be between Chris Martin and Dan Hughes and Steve Knight
and Margaret Shock.
The
Audrey Lawrence Memorial Handicap is always a popular event and this year the
handicappers were very good. Out of the
31 matches played here were 3 tied matches, four with only 1 point difference
and another 6 with 5 points and under separating the players. The eventual winner was Colin Dolding over Harry Jutle.
On
Friday 26th March, when the County Table Tennis Finals were held, a
good gathering of players and spectators witnessed the best standard seen for
some years.
In
the Men’s semi-finals, played at the start of the evening, Ola Andersson beat Michael Owens and Mark Owen beat Dave White
– both in straight sets – but the final match of the night was played over the
best of seven games and it was the first time that all seven games were
required since the introduction of the new scoring system. Ola lost the first game by 10.12 but took the
second by 11.9. Mark then seemed to take
control of the match by winning the next two games by 6 and 7 and had
Championship points in the fifth game before losing it 11.13. The sixth game was also one of very tight
play and Ola eventually won it by 12.10 and he then went on to win the deciding
game by 11.8 and to put his name on the trophy for the third time in four
years.
The
Ladies Singles was won in straight games by Ann Barnes for the fourth
time. Ann also partnered Gillian Davies
to win the Ladies Doubles in which they lost the first game by 9.11 but then
won the next two by 12.10 and the fourth by 12.5. Ann also featured in the Mixed Doubles with
Dave White and took her third title of the night by 6, 4 and 2.
Dave
White was partnered by Alan Salisbury in two Doubles matches. In the Men’s Doubles they met Mark Owen and
Michael Owens who showed that they had not lost their long established
consistency by winning -5, 7, 6, -8 and 6.
Dave and Alan fared better in the Veteran Doubles against Chris Martin
and Steve Brown and won by 9, -7, 3 and 7.
Chris Martin met Michael Owens in the Veteran Singles and Michael won narrowly by 9,- 4, 3 and 12 giving him his second win but Chris managed to win his third event – the Handicap Doubles when he was playing with Dan Hughes – by 7, -8, 9 and 12.
Alan Salisbury won the Restricted Veterans final against Nigel Foreshew by 9, 10, -11 and 5 and Lincoln Franklin won the Restricted Open Singles against Toby Eckley by 10, 9, -6 and 7. Trevor Davies and Dave Hamer had the longest game of the evening when every rally seemed to be never ending but Trevor ended up winning by -10, 4, 7 -8 and 5.
Bob Marshal won the Grade ‘B’ final, beating Mark Conod by -6, 9, 8, -6 and 10.
The Junior boys doubles between Jake Conod and Joe Burnett and Jack Castle and Adam Martin was won by Jack and Adam by 4, -8, 5 and 5 and the boys Singles between Jack and Jake was a close battle but Jack ran out the winner at 8, 8, -11, -8 and 8.

Veteran Division 4D
Hereford 3rd played a single fixture away against
Steve Brown , lose 6,5,11 & win 10, -5, -6, 15, -7; Brian Kitchener , win -10, -5, 7, -11 & win 9, -10, -5, 3, -7
John Hunt, win -10, -5, 7, -11 & lose, 4, 3, 6; Marg Shock, lose, 7, 5, 5
Brian & Marg, lose, 12, -9, -15, 5, 5; Brian & Steve, win, -9, -7, -9; John & Marg, win, -2, -8, -12
Today was a closely fought match with a number of close
games and sets. After Steve lost the
first set to the opposing number 2 John and Brian came out to win their openers
against the opposing number 3 and 1 respectively.
John had to take on Paddy who proved too strong and did not allow John to get into his usual game, this followed by Marg losing out to a strong lady turned the scores round dramatically and suddenly we were down 4-2.
Brian and Steve took on Paddy & Mike in the men’s doubles and really gelled playing for each other against the combination bats running out winners in three-9, -7, -9. At 4-3 down Brian game out to play Mel. As the form player of today all hopes were pinned on Brian and after losing the first it looked like there would be another twist. Brian fought back to take games 2&3 but then Mel took him apart in the fourth to game 3. The pressure was mounting on Brian and he needed to stop pressing quite so hard and just pick the right shot. He did this well in the fifth and got away to a good start although Mel tried to claw his way back Brian’s backhand again won the day and took the fifth to game 7 to level the match score at 4-4.
Steve now to take on Mike and after going well up in the first he lost it to deuce which added more pressure. With better concentration and a proper game plan Steve took the next two games to 5 & 6 and seemed in control however, Mike took the fourth 17-15 in a game that Steve should have taken. Mounting tension and a tightening arm gave a close fifth but at 8-6 up Steve took on a shot that filled him with confidence and took him to 9-6. Mike pressured Steve away form the table and with the score at 10- 7 hit a smash that hit the top of the net. It went high and with Steve well away from the table it was obvious for all to see the Mike’s shot was going on and it appeared irretrievable. Somehow Steve’s anticipation saw him approach the table with the grace of a gazelle and speed of a cheetah and hit a backhand winner around the net. The match score now 5-4 up with one to play. The final doubles saw Marg and John combine with their best display of the season. John able to retrieve anything put at him and Marg regaining confidence to hit the majority of the winners in the first two games which they took to 2 & 8. In the third things were a lot tighter and nobody wanted to take the responsibility for hitting the winning shot! At deuce it appeared that Somerset were going to make this match have one final twist, but John and Marg were not going to let it go now and pulled it out of the bag to win game 12.
Final result we won 6-4.
Player of the day:- without doubt Brian who won both singles and the men’s doubles.
Shot of the day:- As the report described it in such detail I suppose you can all guess ( sorry for boring the team all the way home with it too).
Funniest part of the day:- Steve scoring. I am sure the others will tell all when you see them, but it was necessary to change the scoring machine for a smaller version so that Steve could see the table to umpire.
Best part of the day:- The fact that not only did we win but, every team member made a valuable contribution to the result.
Thanks for reading and thanks to the team for playing well and representing the County colours honourably……Steve Brown.

show against Sue Overton but still lost in straight sets, 2 at deuce. It was
another similar storey in the Men’s doubles for Brian Kitchener and Steve Brown
to lose in straight sets, 2 at deuce to Dean Taylor and Paul Laverty. The
following 2 singles were lost in straights sets for John Hunt to Phil Goulding and Steve Brown to Paul Laverty. In the final

Only three games picked up across 10 sets sounds like a resounding
defeat. The opposition of Paul Laverty,
Phil Goulding, Dean Taylor and Sue Overton were
already on song after there morning game against their other
The best performance of the day was Marg in her singles match, and both
doubles. She played with more confidence
than normal and was hitting well but never quite able to come out on top. John
and Brian both had close games with the number 3 Dean Taylor but were unable to
beat a very consistent player. Steve and Brian were never in the game with the
opposing number 1 Paul Laverty who seems to be at another level for us. The number 2 Phil Goulding
also proved too clever for Steve and John. All three doubles matches were close
but again

Veteran Division 4D
Hereford 3rd played their first double fixture in
Steve
Brown, Brian Kitchener, John Hunt, Marg Shock
Today saw
the start of another veteran season for
First up
Brian showed us exactly what to do taking on the away team number 1 Kevyn Rice and having to concentrate and work hard to come
through 8, -8, 5, -7, 7. This was followed by
John losing out in a very close game to their number 3 Steve Tuckett. With John taking the first things looked up but
then Steve took the next two and looked in command until John got back to
deuce. A nip and tuck finish to the fourth, John pinches it 17-15.
The fifth also went to deuce with John having an opportunity to win at 10-9
up. John finally losing out 7, -5, -7, 15, -11.
Steve then gave the home team the lead again beating the away number 2 John
Shearman 5, 6, -5, 8. Marg and John took on Kevyn and
Pat Lyon in the first mixed. The first three games could have gone either
way with only two points separating the two teams but
Wiltshire 3 v
Steve
Brown, Brian Kitchener, John Hunt, Marg Shock
The
afternoon match against Wiltshire was always going to be tough. We had
had a very hard morning and they were buoyant after a 10- 0 victory in the
morning. Playing as the away team this time meant that Steve was on first
against their number two Colin Thompson a combination bat player. Steve
took the first playing a very controlled game but then lost the plot totally
and was unable to do anything for the next two games. Brian gave some
words of encouragement which unfortunately cannot be printed in case it offends
but they did the trick. Steve played the best mental game he has ever
done and came out on top -7, 1, 2, -8, -8 a great
start for the away team. John then took on Peter Epps the home number 3
who by all accounts was a player who liked to generate lots of spin. Even
John’s pimples could not cope and the match was levelled at 1-1 with John
losing three straight 9, 8, 8. Taking on the
opposition number Glenn Freeman Brian stepped up to the fore. Brian’s
backhand working time after time to take the first two games. But his
opponent was a very controlled player and he tightened up and took the next
three to win -8, -7, 5, 7, 6. We were now 2-1
down but a tactical master stroke by the captain with his doubles selection…………..(sorry for the pause I was just putting down the
trumpet). Normally first doubles would be John and Marg but looking at
the opposition I fielded Brian and Marg and they got the result. Brian
was able to hit some winners because Marg gave him the confidence to do
so. She was positive in her play which meant when Brian’s shot came round
he was able to attack not retrieve. This was a proper team effort
resulting in a win -9, 8, -5, -4. With the match
at 2-2 we hit a lul and lost the next three.
Colin beat John Hunt 9, 9, 6. Marg up against a very strong lady in Julie
Dean was unable to reproduce her doubles form and whilst the ladies had an open
game Julie was too quick and strong for Marg 3, 4, 4. The men’s doubles
not as per plan Brian and Steve never in the game losing 3 straight 4, 6,
4. Now 5-2 down it was up to Brian to take on Peter
Epps. Having faced him in two doubles combinations Brian knew what
to expect. He had a plan and stuck to it well taking the initiative when
required and stepping back and allowing himself more
time when required. The constant changing never allowed his opponent to
settle and Brian put us back in with a shout winning -7, 4, -7, -8. It was now up to Steve to take on Glen and all
looked good for a really, really, really short time. At 5-1 up in the
first Steve seemed to be aware of what to do but then hit the wall and found
himself 7-0 down in the second before he scored his next point. Steve had
no answers and lost easily with a disappointing performance 5, 4, 7. The
final mixed with John and Marg against Glen and Julie was also three straight
4, 7, 2. Final result: Wiltshire thirds 7
In all a
good start to this years campaign but once again showing what strength in depth
the surrounding county’s have.
Ah well
at least we chuckle when someone gets two nets and an edge to win a game.
For me it is far better to captain the team that enjoys it whatever the result.
Thanks again to the other three County representatives who as usual acquitted
themselves honourably.

experiences for all and an enjoyable day out.

Also some other close games which could have gone either way.

Andy
Report on the
Two
evenings of very enjoyable Table Tennis were played at
Sixteen
players from the County played in four teams of four players.
Each
individual was given a handicap, which they kept throughout the
competition. These handicaps had been
set by a sub committee and the 16 players had been placed in two groups of
eight in the order of their league results.
Each team, therefore had two players from the top half and two
from the bottom.
Players 1
and 2 played each other and 3 and 4 likewise.
There was also a doubles set with one player from each half of the
rankings.
Play was up
to 21 points in the best of three sets.
A player scores a point for each 5 points they win – so a game going to
21.15 gives the first player 4 points and the second one 3 points. It makes for very interesting play because
each person starts with their handicap score, which on this occasion the
highest handicap was 15.
On the
first evening Team A – Gill Davies (15), Jonathan Bacon (0), Chris Bacon (9)
and Nigel Foreshew (0) played team C – James Palmer (0), Margaret Shock (7),
Harry Jutle (0) and James Dance (6) and at the end of the nine sets the score
was tied on 81 points each which meant that another doubles set had to be
played using the two players from each team who had not played earlier. The score ended up as 21.13 and 22.20 –
giving the A team a win by 8.6.
On the
other table Team B – Craig Jones (10), Huan Davies
(0), Adrian Marshall (8) and Trevor Davies (0) played team D – John Bacon (0),
Sue Segust (5), Steve Brown (0) and Bob Marshall (5).
In this
match Craig picked up 8 points, Huan 2, Trevor 1 and
Adrian 3 including one from his father, which gave them an easy win.
The
following week everyone returned for the reverse fixtures with the winners and
losers playing each other.
This time
Nigel was too strong for the B team and picked up 10 points and was supported
by Gill and Chris who picked up 3 points each and Jonathan who ended up
quits.
The C and D
teams again ended up with tied points after nine sets. The players were so evenly matched that the
doubles win by Bob and Sue which gave them 3 points saved the score line but the two James’
playing in the final doubles set met Steve and John and a really tough set
resulted in the D team winning by 15.21, 14.21 and 27.25 to give them 12.10 on
points.
Everyone
agreed at the end of the evenings that it is a friendly way to end the season
and, hopefully we will have more players next year. Congratulations go to the handicappers for
their contribution.
