Veteran Division 4D Hereford 3rd played their first double fixture in Portsmouth, Dorset against Cornwall in the morning and Dorset 2nd in the afternoon resulting in 8-2 and 6-4 wins. This is the best start ever  for the team.

Today saw the first game of the season for the youthful HR3 team.  First match against Cornwall who in previous seasons had always been a close call.  Steve Knight stepped up against Austin Chapman and romped away with a 3 straight win having to work hard but not making any mistakes.  This was followed by Steve Brown winning in three against Chris Solway and being in control for the majority of the game.  Nigel Forshew then added to this great start with a 3 straight win against Bernard Harvey.  All was looking good and in the first mixed Nigel and Sue took the first two games closely 9 & 11.  However Austin & Kate dug in with deep resolve and came through -6, -7 to level at 2 games all.  The deciding fifth was a bit more straight forward with the Cornwall pair closing out to game 3.  Match score now at 3-1.  Steve Knight then took the next men’s singles after dropping the first game -9, he took the next three 4, 7, & 5 to increase the match score.  Sue then came on to play Kate who in the doubles had shown herself to be a tight controlled player.  In the single she was totally different playing some great attacking strokes which had not been seen earlier in the day. Whilst Sue was close in the first losing out -9 Kate proved too strong and started moving away winning the next two -6 & -2.  Cornwall were not giving in so it was up to the Steve’s to get something out of the men’s doubles. A very tight game going all the way to the fifth with Hereford coming out on top 8, -10, 9, -8, 8.  With a minimum of a draw already achieved the pressure seemed to come off the shoulders of everyone. Steve Brown stayed on to play Bernard and after dropping the first game took the next three to ensure a Hereford victory.  Nigel pushed home the advantage even further with a very tough battle against Austin winning game 9 in the deciding fifth.  The final mixed doubles saw Sue & Steve Knight make it again in the fifth.

Scores: Steve Knight11-7, 11-7, 11-6 and 9-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-5. Steve Brown 11-7, 11-4, 12-10 and 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8. Nigel Foreshew 11-6, 11-9, 12-10 and 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9. Sue Segust 9-11, 6-11, 2-11. 1st mixed doubles Sue Segust and Nigel Foreshew 11-9, 13-11, 6-11, 7-11, 3-11. Men’s doubles Steve Knight and Steve Brown 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8. Sue Segust and Steve Knight 5-11, 11-5, 4-11, 13-11, 11-9.

The afternoon saw Hereford take on the home team and hosts Dorset 2.  This was to be a tight game throughout going right down to the last mixed doubles before a result was achieved.

Nigel Foreshew was on first against the pen-hold style of Andy Mitchell.  Nigel winning in three -8, -9, -8.  Steve Brown on second again continued the trend coming out on top against the long pimples of Derrick Dawson -6, -9, -10.  The third men’s saw Steve Knight have a real ding dong battle with Ian Johnstone 8, -8, -4, 4, -8.  Steve Knight keeping up the men’s 100% start to the season and the match score at 3-0.  Sue & Nigel stepped up for the first mixed but lost out to Ian and Miranda 7, 9, -8, 6.  Steve Brown then took on Andy Mitchell and in a long tussle took the set in the deciding fifth game, -8, 7, -8, 9, -7.  At 4-1 up the signs were looking good.  Next on were Sue and Miranda.  Miranda ran away with the first game to 3.  Sue buckled down and took the next -8 and in a very tight third she pinched it -10, but Miranda found another gear and although Sue stepped it up too Miranda proved just slightly too strong wining the next two games 6 & 7.  The two Steve’s then never got a look in the men’s doubles losing out to Andy & Ian 6, 10, 8.  Suddenly the match score was 4-3 to Hereford.  Steve Knight secured a victory over Derrick to put us 5-3 up.  The final men’s singles saw Nigel taking on Ian.  Ian had got his eye in well and pushed Nigel hard but did manage the control the game and win three straight 8, 10, 9.  Now at 5-4 up the final mixed doubles was to be the deciding factor.  Sue and Steve Knight against Miranda and Derrick. The first two games went quickly with the Hereford pair winning -2 & -5.  All was looking well when the Dorset pair found some collective form and took the third game to 8.  The fourth was a tight affair to start but then Hereford pushed harder and came through to win to game7.  Relief all round 2 matches and 2 wins.

Scores: Nigel Foreshew 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 and 8-11, 10-12, 9-11. Steve Brown 11-6, 11-9, 12-10 and 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7. Steve Knight 8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 4-11, 11-8 and 12-10, 11-3, 11-8. Sue Segust 3-11, 11-8, 12-10, 6-11, 7-11. 1st mixed doubles Sue Segust and Nigel Foreshew 7-11, 9-11, 11-8, 6-11. Men’s doubles Steve Knight and Steve Knight 6-11, 10-12, 8-11. 2nd mixed doubles Sue Segust and Steve Knight 11-2, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7.

Great start to the season for HR3.  Two matches and two wins.  Thanks to the team for their support with my decisions on the doubles pairings.  Thanks to all of you for the way in which you all turned out and conducted yourself when representing the County.  The next match is in the new year.

COUNTY TABLE TENNIS on Saturday 15-Jan-2011

Veteran Division 4D Hereford 3rd travelled to play their second double fixture in Reading, Berkshire against Devon 2nd in the morning and Somerset 4th in the afternoon. The team were 1-4 down to Devon 2nd, then fought back to 4-4. Nigel Foreshew’s finals singles was 1 game all, 7 points all in the 3rd game when Sadley his opponent, Phil Reeves, collapsed. The following was received from Allan Bruton.

to all Captains,

Following the incident at Kingfisher today I have spoken to Les Smith regarding the unfinished fixtures and he would expect them to be restarted from scratch where the teams for the rearrangement would be different but the matches could be played to a finish if the players are the same.

He is also happy for any of these matches to be played during my absence or they can wait untill we can agree another joint venue.

Costings, I have requested that Berkshire do not charge for any hall hire today but I do need to go to committee to confirm, so any costings for today will not be sorted untill my return.

 regards

 Allan

Just received news the Devon player passed away.

Latest information received.

Hello everyone,

This is to formally notify you of what most suspected, Phil Reeves passed away after the incident at Kingfisher TTC on Saturday. I have delayed sending this because the medical staff at Reading hospital and the Police were not prepared to give us detailed information until they had contacted all of the next of kin, although they were making it as clear to us as they could that this was the outcome. This was still the case when we finally left the hospital at 6 on Saturday, and I eventually received the confirmation yesterday afternoon.

Some people have phoned me and requested that I pass on condolences to the family, which I will do on behalf of all the people involved on Saturday. Can I also thank all of the people who helped in the emergency and worked so hard to try to save Phil's life.

Steve - regarding our match with you and the content of Alan's e-mail. I will telephone you shortly to discuss the implications and agree the best way forward. We hope your team, and in particular Nigel who was playing Phil at the time, are ok. Pass on our regards to them all.

Best wishes

Kevyn Rice (Devon 2)

Match played to conclusion on 12/03/2011:

Marg and I had a terrific game against Kevyn Rice and Pat Lyon.
We lost the first narrowly 11-9, after being just behind throughout.  In the second we took a mid game lead of 7-2 only to lose out 15-13 after some great tactical play by the opposition.  In the third we were down and often trailing by a couple of points but getting back to deuce and pulling off a good game winning 16-14.  Marg had played very consistently throughout and in the fourth Steve hit a purple patch where he added to Marg's consistency with some good winners to take the game 11-5.  This set up a final game which until 8-8 was nip and tuck.  Unfortunatley a combination of good play and one unforced error on our side saw us lose 11-8.

The final match score being a draw 5-5.

Other results for the record as follows

Kevyn Rice v Nigel Forshew 4, -5, -5, 0, 5               (1-0)
John Shearman v Steve Brown -10, -6, -9               (1-1)
Steve Knight v Phil Reeves -3, 7, 6, -3, 16               (2-1)
John/Pat v Nigel/Marg 8, 7, 8                                (3-1)
Kevyn Rice v Steve Brown -7, 8, 4, -11, -7              (3-2)
Pat Lyon v Marg Shock 5, 4, 6                               (4-2)
Phil/Kevyn v Nigel/Steve K -7, -7, -4                      (4-3)
John Shearman v Steve Knight -8, -9, 6, 6, -3         (4-4)
Phil Reeves v Nigel Forshew -10, 18 (match conceded)  (4-5)
Kevyn/Pat v Steve B/Marg 9, 13, -14, -5, 8              (5-5)

We are playing our other outstanding game against Somerset on 26th March as a single venue.  Nigel, Myself and Brian along with Lin is the confirmed available team.

Best Regards
Steve

Junior team's 2nd session in the National Junior League

On Saturday 22nd January 2010 we were at Wood Green again, for a further 5 matches, against, generally stronger opposition than session 1.

Jake, Jack, Joe and Zoe all gave improved performances, and with a bit more luck and/or experience our match results would have been far better.

As follows:

V Colebridge A (0-6): Jack lost 3-1 v No 3; Jake lost 3-1 v No 1

V Burton A (2-4): Jack (0-3 & 3-0); Jake (1-3 & 0-3); Joe (3-0 & 2-3)

Burton’s manager questioned Joe playing at No 3, but he certainly proved why against Wood Green D!

 V Wood Green A (2-4): Jack (3-2 & 0-3); Jake (3-2 & 2-3); Zoe (1-3 & 0-3)

Jack & Jake both beat the No 1. Zoe lost 6, 9 & 9 against a good junior girl who has thrashed her in the past.

V Stroud B (3-3): Jake (3-1 & 3-0); Joe (1-3 & 3-2); Zoe (2-3 & 2-3)

We certainly deserved a win here

V Wood Green D (4-2): Jack (3-0 & 3-0); Joe (1-3 & w/o); Zoe (1-3 & w/o)

We are there again next Saturday competing in groups based on results in the first 2 sessions. Hopefully we have done enough to be in the middle group where we will be both competitive and challenged.

 Regards, Andy

Herefordshire County Table Tennis Association Invitation Cup Competition 2011

Thursday May 5th and 12th at Bromyard School 7.30pm

So far nobody has let me know that they are interested in playing in this competition.

Those who have played before have always enjoyed the fun of an end of season social yet competitive couple of evenings.  Everyone has always gone away looking forward to the next time.

The rules are very different to our usual play.

1.       Everyone is given a handicap by a handicap committee based on the end of season averages in each division.

2        From those who have entered, teams are drawn taking players from the top and the bottom of the averages alternatively so each team is composed of players who do not play together and have probably not played against each other.  This makes for some very even and enjoyable competition.

3        There are four players in each team and the top two players play the other two top players and likewise with the bottom two.   Each player therefore plays two singles sets.  There is also a doubles set consisting of one player from the top two and bottom two players.   If at the end of these 9 sets the scores are tied then the remaining four players play another doubles set.   Last year in two of our matches this was necessary – showing just how close the competition was.

4        Scoring is up to 21 – with the old scoring system and the best of three games.  This makes handicapping a little bit easier.   However you score one point for each 5 points you win in a game.  In a set of A v B if the score ends up as 21.6, 9.21, 21.23 – A scores 9 points and B scores 9 points.  You can see from this that every point counts.

5        To make it even more interesting the handicapping is in every game so if player A is on 5 and player B on 10 the scoring starts at 5 – 10.    Some players may even have a minus handicap meaning that they have to score that number of points before getting to ‘0’ and then trying to get to 21!

Last year we had just 16 players but the four teams played the first week and then the second week the winners played each other and the losers likewise.

I shall have clip boards at all three Championships events for you to sign up but I would love to hear from anyone wanting to play before then by telephone or email.

If we do not get enough players we will cancel the event for this year.  The fee payable will depend on how many players enter – to cover the costs.

Report on the Herefordshire County Table Tennis Championships

Finals Night held at Queen Elizabeth School, Bromyard on 25th March 2011: From Cicely Palmer – County Secretary – 01684 540 595     cis@forwil.co.uk

A large number of spectators came to the Finals Night of the Herefordshire County Table Tennis Championships held at Queen Elizabeth School, Bromyard and the standard of play certainly did not disappoint them.

The evening opened with the Men’s Singles Semi-Finals when No.1 seed, and defending Champion, Ola Andersson won by 3, 3 and 8 against Andy Castle and Toby Eckley having a tighter match with Steve Brown but won by 9, 2 and 12.

At the end of the evening Andersson and Eckley played the final over the best of seven games and despite dropping their first two games, Andersson won a very hard hitting set by -8, -7, 7, 9, 8 and 9 so he retains the title for the third time in succession.

Having become the youngest Ladies Champion in the history of Herefordshire Table Tennis at the age of 14 last week, Zoe Castle, was in action again this week in the Junior Doubles with her brother, Jack, against Jake Conod and Joe Burnett.  It was a match of high standard and went the full distance with Zoe & Jack winning by -10, 9, -5, 7 and 7.

Jack also played in the Junior Final against Jake and this time Jake won by 8, -10,5 and 6.

Nigel Foreshew was in four different events during the evening.  In the Restricted Veterans Singles he played against a member of his team, Lincoln Franklin and lost by 7, 6 and 5 and in the Veterans Doubles the two of them teamed up to play Dave White and Alan Salisbury and narrowly lost after some very tough rallies, by 7, -10, 4 and 7.   Foreshew’s partner in the Handicap Doubles, where the partners are drawn according to league average results, was David Gwilt.  They played Chris Martin and Margaret Shock in a very good match in which Martin & Shock lost the first game to 2 but took the next three by 16-14, 11-9 and 12-10.   However in the Audrey Lawrence Handicap competition Foreshew played Harry Jutle and with both of them on scratch, Foreshew won by 8, 9, 9 and 2.

The Veteran’s Singles match between White and Franklin saw White win again, this time in straight games by 6, 8 and 12.

The two Men’s Singles finalists were on the same side of the net in the Men’s Doubles when they teamed up to play Martin and Brown and won by 8, 5 and 4.

The longest match of the night was the event for players not in the top ten league average positions.  Jutle and Brown played and although he was two games to one down after three games, Jutle pulled back to win by -8, 10, -9, 7 and 7.

The Restricted Open Singles title was won by Eckley who beat Salisbury in four games by 3, 7, -9 and 4.

The Super Veteran event, for players over 60, was won by Trevor Davies who beat Neville Meredith by 7, -7, 7 and 7.

COUNTY TABLE TENNIS RESULTS on Saturday 26-Mar-2011

Veteran Division 4D : Hereford 3 V Somerset 4; Match Result was a win for Somerset by 7-3.

The Teams

Hereford 3                                          Somerset 4

Nigel Forshew                                     Jerry Musselwhite

Steve Brown                                       Nick Branch

Brian Kitchener                                   Steve Husbands

Lin Ashman                                        Wendy Pryce

The Hereford team travelled to Walton-in-Gordano to complete the outstanding fixture from January.  With Steve Knight no longer available due to injury (good luck with the operation Steve) the third spot was ably filled by a welcome return from Brian Kitchener.

There was a very good team spirit during the day and whilst the opposition proved too strong on the day there were some good individual performances.

In the singles Nigel won one and lost one.  In his first game he was pushed but somehow in control throughout.  His second game was a very tight game.  His performance was consistent and with dogged determination he came from 2-1 down to take the 4th.  The fifth game was nip and tuck throughout until a very relieved Somerset number 1 ran out winner game 8.  Nigel’s performance in both singles and doubles was something to admire today.  He worked hard and was pushed but proved he was very much up to the task of being number 1 for the team.

Brian lost his first match in four after taking the first game however, his opponent got stronger as the game went on.  In his second game Brian pulled out all the stops including some defending from the full length of the hall away from the table.  He kept high pressure on his opponent and although he dropped a game ran out a worthy winner in four.  For Brian the return to County play was as if he had never left the arena both socially and in his play.  With a performance like this a useful reminder that places in the team are there to be challenged for.

Lin stepped up to the mark for her singles and doubles.  She lost her singles in straight games to Wendy Pryce but did have a chance to turn things around in the second but lost to deuce.  This gave Wendy sufficient momentum to press on and take the third game to clinch the set.

In the doubles Lin played the first one with Nigel against Jerry and Wendy.  Lin’s return of service and, use of angles were very instrumental in keeping the Hereford pair in the game.  After going down two games to love they pulled back to 2-2 but in the fifth were unable to keep the momentum going finally losing out game 4.  Lin played really well and deserved something from the day which she finally got in the last mixed doubles.  She played with Steve and again as she had previously she returned serve very well, kept tight angles and never gave the opponents an opportunity to attack.  The whole set was tight with Steve and Lin winning the first two to 9 and dropping the next two game 9 and 10 respectively.  The fifth and final game saw the Hereford pair take an early lead to the change round but then being pegged back for the game to go all the way.  Hereford eventually winning game 9 in the fifth.

Steve’s performance unfortunately just a little off the pace in the singles but happy to finish with a good doubles partnership.

Full scores for the day.

Nick Branch                v          Nigel Forshew             -9, -5, -9                      (0-1)

Steve Husbands          v          Brian Kitchener           -8, 8, 6, 3                     (1-1)

Jerry Musselwhite       v          Steve Brown               8, 5, 4                          (2-1)

Jerry & Wendy            v          Nigel & Lin                 11, 5, -9, -9, 4              (3-1)

Nick Branch                v          Brian Kitchener           -5, -7, 9, -9                  (3-2)

Wendy Pryce              v          Lin Ashman                6, 10, 3                        (4-2)

Jerry & Steve              v          Nigel & Brian              6, 4, 7                          (5-2)

Jerry Musselwhite       v          Nigel Forshew             8, -6, -9, 8, 8                (7-2)

Nick & Wendy            v          Steve & Lin                 -9, -9, 9, 10, -9            (7-3)

The next fixtures are Sat 2nd April at Bromyard where we play our last two games.

Thanks to the team for changing their plans and turning out for this re-arranged fixture and representing the County admirably as always.

Steve.
