HEREFORDSHIRE RANKING TOURNAMENT

In the latest Herefordshire Table Tennis Ranking Tournament Josh Price [Whitecross School] and Allen Spencer [Bishops School] excelled themselves.

In the preliminary round Josh Price [who was ranked 16 in the county] played Lauren James [10] in a well fought 5 set match were both players played some of their best ever Table Tennis with Josh winning 11/13, 11/3, 11/7, 6/11, 13/11.

Other close matches in the preliminaries were between Nick Wilson [4] and Jessica Davies [9] with Nick just hanging on to win 9/11,11/7, 5/11, 12/10, 12/10 while First time players Kelly Lieghton [6th Form] just lost to Thomas Daniel [Bishops] 15/13, 11/9, 7/11,7/11, 2/11. Two other first time players both from the new Eardisley Table Tennis club also had a great battle with Oliver Mason beating Jake Adams 4/11, 9/11, 11/9, 13/11, 11/8.

In group one in the second round Allen Spencer [5] caused the major upset of the day when he beat, for the first time ever, Joe Davies [2] 11/8, 11/8, 8/11, 5/11, 11/2 in a match where he uncharacteristically managed to hit many winning forehand topspin shots against Joe’s disguised long pimple returns. This win meant that Allen finished 2nd behind the unbeaten Greg Price [Whitecross]. Also in this group Josh Price, an Eleven year old from Whitecross School who started the day ranked at 16 , played well to Beat Jessica Davies [9] 11/8, 11/9, 11/8, to move up the ranking by 7 places to 9.

The counties top two girls were both in this group and had their usual needle match with Nikki Segust [6th Form] just beating Jessica Davies [St Mary’s] 7/11, 11/4, 10/12, 11/9, 11/6.

Lauren James played well to win group 2, her only real challenge coming from Tom Barker [Bishops] who played well to win 11/8, 11/8, 11/6. This win helped Tom to gain 9 places in the county ranking to be at 18.

Richard Daniel [Bishops] won group 3 with newcomers Matthew Davies [Eardisley TTC] 2nd and Kelly Leighton [6th Form] 3rd.

In the School Team competition Whitecross won with Bishops School second.

The next tournament, which is suitable for beginners and experienced players, will be held at Whitecross School on the 2nd March. Application forms are available from Steve Watkins..
