HEREFORDSHIRE COUNTY JUNIOR TABLE TENNIS TRIALS 2004

The Herefordshire annual junior table tennis trials were held at Whitecross school on the 15th February.

This event gives any player in the county under the age of 17 an opportunity to establish a county ranking and is open to anyone who would like to compete regardless of standard of play.

This year with an increased interest being shown by Herefordshire schools we had entries from Hereford. Kingstone,Ledbury, Bodenham,Leominster,Bartestree and Dormington. 15 of the entries were from players who had never entered before.

The event played in 2 stages consists of a round robin where the unseeded players get a chance to play against the top seeds and if they have improved enough during the year and beat a seed they get promoted. This year there were no such upsets so the top 8 seeded players went on to play a round robin for a ranking of 1 to 8 while the remaining players played in other groups to establish their ranking positions.

After 6 years of trying Greg Price [ Whitecross school] just managed to beat his younger brother Josh [whitecross] in a hard fought final match and so gain the number one title for the county for the first time. The top 8 places went to

1] Greg Price

2] Josh Price [whitecross]

3]Shaun Chambers [whitecross]

4]Nick Wilson [6th form Hereford]

5]Oliver Hales [ Bishops]

6]Tom Browning [Bishops]

7] Alex Reilly [Bishops]

8]Oliver Farr [St Marys]

Greg price will have to play his brother Josh again on the county finals night on the 19th March for the title of Junior champion. This should prove to be an exciting final , especially for the their parents who will not know which son to cheer on.

Josh will also feature in the under 15 final when he will play against Shaun Chambers for the title of Cadet champion..
