Welcome to the Home Page of my personal web site. This is linked with a professional site, www.land-resources.com, which gives results from 40 years of work on land resources, particularly in the developing world; it also carries chapter summaries of my book, Land Resources: Now and for the Future, together with News items and Updates.

Lives in Norwich, UK. Married to Doreen, two children, three grandchildren. Present position: Honorary Research Fellow in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia. Partly retired, but active in consultancy and scientific writing. For career, see CV.

This personal site lists interests which lie outside my professional activities:

  • Music, especially opera, and Schubert.
  • Singing: lieder, choral and opera (as a bass)
  • Golf: following a lifetime of interest in sport, but lack of ability, retirement allows me to indulge in this way.
  • Anne Pratt (1806-1893), botanical illustrator and author, my Great Great Great Aunt.
  • John Lack (1823-1892), Norfolk Artist, my Great Grandfather.
  • Mado Robin (1918-1960), French coloratura soprano - no family connection, I am simply fascinated by her exceptionally high voice.
  • The Lack family of Swaffham, the genealogy of my mother's family, originating from north-west Norfolk.

There are web links to Anne Pratt and Mado Robin, but none have yet been found to John (Gildon) Lack. If any viewer of this site has interests in, or information about, the three people and the family named, I should be grateful to hear from them.
