Translations of Epictetus on the Internet

Translations of Epictetus may be found at the following sites:

For a complete edition of George Long’s famous nineteenth-century translation of the Discourses, please visit The Internet Classics Archive.

There are several translations of the Handbook available on-line:

Nicholas White’s translation. This is the text from the 1983 Hackett edition, and includes White’s very helpful Introduction [highly recommended].

My own translation of the Handbook at my Stoic Foundation site, which is duplicated at my Yahoo Geocities site [a work in progress].

P. E. Matheson’s translation. (First 38 Chapters only.)

Thomas Wentworth Higginson’s translation.

Elizabeth Carter’s translation.

George Long’s translation.

New sites are appearing all the time, and it is well worth the trouble of doing a search for Epictetus every once in a while.

Please contact me with news of any good sites that you find, or to comment on or query aspects of Epictetus. k.h.s@btinternet.com

My own Stoic site is at The Stoic Foundation.

This page is maintained by Dr. Keith H. Seddon, author of the Epictetus article at the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

See my short article on Epictetus (in pdf format — please be patient while it loads).
