Shalesbrook Morris Dancers

Dancing in the Ashdown Forest, 2003Shalesbrook Morris celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2003.

The group was founded in 1977 and takes its name from the "Shales Brook" which runs through the pretty Sussex village of Forest Row on the edge of Ashdown Forest where we practice.

The dances we perform are mainly from the Cotswold villages of Bampton, Adderbury, Fieldtown and Headington.

The dances are symbolic of rural tasks such as seed sowing and harvesting as the origins of Morris date back to pre-Christian times and ancient fertility rites.

Our costume reflects the colour of the forest in autumn. A fox is our motto and a sighting of her will ensure good luck and fortune! For even greater luck place a coin or two in our collecting basket, we try to raise at least £400 a year for our local charity the Gateway Club.

The Gateway Club, affiliated to Mencap, provides a secure meeting place and varied social activities for local people of all ages who have learning difficulties.

We dance locally through the summer and have our own Dancing at the Gateway Club, 2003 "Cream Tea Weekend" away in September each year, this has become quite in/famous involving lots of dancing, real ale, cream buns and merriment!

We always welcome new members.
