Creating a classic

back to Garden Surfaces With classic garden designs, the entire plan
should be thought out in advance. Subsequent alterations could be expensive and
difficult. Since much of the formal structure will be in the form of growing
shrubs or trees, there will be a time factor too.
Here are some hints on
design: Begin your task on paper.
Take careful measurements of the whole site and then make a scale drawing.
Try several different
arrangements of pathways and key features. Bear in mind the importance of
symmetry, and of neat, clean lines and keep your design simple.
Try to include
vistas, leading the eye from such key points as windows, doors or seating areas
to distant objects or fine views.
If there is enough
space, include screens - tall hedges or fences- so that parts of the garden are
concealed from the overall view.
Decide on the
materials you wish to use, and try to keep these as uniform as possible to
avoid fussiness, but include some variety, to avoid monotony. Hedges, for
example, could vary considerably in size or shape, and in choice of hedging
material, but should still be part of an overall, cohesive pattern.
If you are computer minded, there are lots of simple drawing
software packages that you could use to design your garden. There are also
garden design packages. |
