Shading is necessary, in summer, to prevent the greenhouse from overheating. There are several methods for creating shade in the greenhouse:

• The simplest method is to purchase specially formulated shading paint. This is mixed like whitewash and applied in spring. It is easy to wipe off in autumn.
• Shading panels are available for some models of aluminium greenhouse. These are easy to clip into place.
• Shading fabric such as woven plastic netting can also be clipped into place, usually on the inside of the building.
• As an alternative shading device, plant and train a grapevine to provide living shade all summer, and a delicious autumn harvest.

If possible, plant your grapevine in bare soil outside the greenhouse, leading its main stem through the side of the greenhouse. This will enable a wider, cooler root-run and will reduce the risk of mildew on the vine leaves.
