Many people have heard about organic fertilisers, but do not know what the advantages of using such products are. Traditionally farmers and growers always used organic fertilisers in the form of farmyard manure. This was obtained from animals that were kept on their farms. Farmyard manure is made from animal excrement and some form of bedding material, usually straw. When the animal houses are cleaned out this manure is heaped up and left to decompose naturally, this manure is then spread onto the fields before the next crop is planted.

The use of organic fertilisers has many benefits for the farmer, grower and gardener. Plants use three main nutrients to grow, Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P) and Potassium (K). These nutrients can all be supplied by natural plant and animal residues in the soil, in fact these nutrients and many others are stored in the soil by organic matter and are released as the plants use them. By using organic fertilisers in your garden you will increase the amount of nutrients available to your plants. You will also improve the soil structure by adding organic matter and minerals to the soil.

Adding organic matter to your soil will make it easier to work, natural organisms in the soil will help you by improving drainage, tilth and workability. After a period of regular applications, your soil will become richer and darker in appearance and you will notice an increase in the number of worms which are good for your soil. The soil will become easier to work and digging will become less of a chore. Your plants will look stronger and healthier, and vegetables and flowers will be more productive.

By enriching the soil, you will have stronger, healthier plants, more resistant to drought and pest and disease attack. You may find that you can reduce the amount of chemicals you use over a period of time.
