back to Garden Surfaces Create a truly classical garden whose
timeless style and distinctive features are as beautiful surrounding a modern
home as they would have been throughout our long gardening history.
Classical gardens were as popular
in the first millennium, with the Ancient Romans, as they are in today's
mechanised world. Then, as now, trees, hedges and structures were used to
create a disciplined pattern among which less formal planting would develop
more naturally.
The Romans used box or myrtle for
their hedging, and indulged in such fragrant ground cover as sweet violets or
lavender. They loved formal statuary, in their fancy villa gardens, but would
trail ivy over them, just as we might use climbing plants to relieve the
hardness of brick work or stone.
Even with today's bewildering
choice of plants, it is still easy to create a garden whose style is truly
timeless.
