Most properties will require painting on a regular basis to keep them in good condition. The time between repainting will depend upon the location of the house, the weather since the last decoration and the quality of the previous work.
Care is required to select the correct paint system, to prepare the surfaces and to apply the primer, undercoat and top coat.
Paint failure is usually the result of inadequate preparation and poor application.

There are no rules to help you decide on the best colours for your home. However, it pays to have some regard for your neighbours' sensitivities. Take a look at the other houses in your street - you might pick up some ideas for successful colour schemes that will lend character to your house.

Before your start... SAFETY FIRST
Before you climb a ladder, make sure it is stable and fixed securely to the structure of the house. Don't allow children to play under ladders or scaffold towers. For more advice on using ladders and scaffold towers safely, see the section 'Safety'.

It is important to protect electrical equipment with an RCD (Residual Current Device) when working outdoors and make sure extension leads are fully unwound during use.

Helpful TIP Painting is not difficult once you have mastered the basics, but you need a head for heights when working up a ladder or scaffold.
