Conversion

back to Loft Conversion Make your loft a more useful space by
fitting a loft ladder, boarding over the floor and fitting a loft light.
The loft is a very useful storage
place. Access can be improved for comparatively little cost by fitting an
extending loft ladder. Other easy and useful changes include insulation,
lighting and the provision of a safe surface on which to walk and to store
items securely.
If you want to turn your loft
into extra living space, you will need to consult your Local Authority's
Building Control Officer. Planning regulations apply to many aspects of the
work.
Choose an overcast day to
work in the loft. Bright summer sunshine will make it uncomfortably hot and in
the winter it can get very cold.
Before your start... SAFETY FIRST Lay planks over loft joists to
prevent an accident. Lofts can be full of fine dust, so wear respiratory
protection in the form of a half mask if you are cleaning up or removing old
insulation.
Helpful TIP
Woodworking knowledge is required for enlarging a loft hatch or fitting a
ladder. Fitting a loft light takes electrical skills so, if in doubt, employ an
electrician.
Important If you
have any doubt that the job you are about to start may need planning permission
or be subject to building regulations, check with your local council or an
architect. The council have the authority to make you pull your work down if it
does not comply with the regulations. |
