A patio is a perfect place to enjoy the summer sunshine. It can also work as a low-maintenance area of your garden and a level surface for your container gardens and lawn furniture.

There are a wide range of paving slabs for you to choose from to create a distinctive patio that suits your needs. Most paving slabs are made from concrete but have an attractive surface finish - some are smooth, some textured. Other slabs are moulded to resemble natural riven stone, and there are even large slabs divided by grooves that make them look like an area of small paving blocks or sets. Why not compliment your new patio with a 'Low Maintenance Garden'?

Before your start... SAFETY FIRST
The main dangers come from lifting and placing heavy paving slabs, so take care not to strain your back.
Wear gloves and eye protectors when cutting slabs to size.

Helpful TIP Laying a patio is hard physical labour. It pays to have an assistant to help you lift and manoeuvre heavy paving slabs.

Builders merchants are open to the public as well as the trade. If you have a lot of work to do and envisage spending a lot of money on materials, ask the manager of the local builders merchants if you can open an account. This will save you at least 10% of the cost and builders merchants are quite often cheaper than diy stores. The advice you will receive there is almost always far more accurate than that received in diy stores.
