With such a bewildering choice of shapes, sizes and colours it is worth taking care to grow only the very best in your garden.

Whatever size your garden may be, and whatever your preferred design, plants are crucial to its success. Besides providing a constant display of colour and interest, giving visual delight, plants please the other senses especially taste and smell. Plants fulfil several vital functions:

• Trees and shrubs give height and structure, creating an architectural outline.
• Planned planting in beds and borders will ensure a gorgeous succession of displays throughout the year.
• Planned vegetable gardens will supply you with year round food.
• Hedges or living screens provide shelter and privacy.
• Plants help to create a wildlife haven.

THE AWARD OF GARDEN MERIT (AGM)
The Award of Garden Merit is given to plants of outstanding garden value. It was devised and is administered by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), to help gardeners select the best for their gardens. The award is given after trials in RHS gardens, or after exhaustive evaluation by RHS experts. In good nurseries and garden centres, plants carrying the award bear this symbol :

All AGM plants are tagged in the RHS Plantfinder, an annually updated guide to over 70,000 plant types commercially available.
