back to Plants With such a bewildering choice of shapes,
sizes and colours it is worth taking care to grow only the very best in your
garden.
Whatever size your garden may be,
and whatever your preferred design, plants are crucial to its success. Besides
providing a constant display of colour and interest, giving visual delight,
plants please the other senses especially taste and smell. Plants fulfil
several vital functions:
Trees and shrubs give
height and structure, creating an architectural outline. Planned
planting in beds and borders will ensure a gorgeous succession of displays
throughout the year. Planned vegetable gardens will supply you
with year round food. Hedges or living screens provide shelter
and privacy. Plants help to create a wildlife haven.
THE AWARD OF GARDEN MERIT
(AGM) The Award of Garden Merit is given to plants of outstanding garden
value. It was devised and is administered by the Royal Horticultural Society
(RHS), to help gardeners select the best for their gardens. The award is given
after trials in RHS gardens, or after exhaustive evaluation by RHS experts. In
good nurseries and garden centres, plants carrying the award bear this symbol
:
All AGM plants are tagged in
the RHS Plantfinder, an annually updated guide to over 70,000 plant types
commercially available.
