Far from merely reducing size, pruning is a means of getting the very best out of your flowering and fruiting shrubs.

Since ancient times, man has known that pruning woody plants results in a number of beneficial changes. Here are some of the main reasons for pruning:

Changing Shape
Pruning helps to keep plants to a desired size and shape.

Promoting flowers
Timely pruning can result in a huge increase in flowering.

Promoting Fruit
Correct pruning will ensure the heaviest crops.

Retaining Vigour
Pruning stimulates growth in almost all woody plants.

Reducing Disease
When old wood is removed, the risk of disease is reduced.

Rejuvenation
Hard cutting of very old shrubs can give them a new lease of life.

Before your start... SAFETY FIRST
WARNING
A tree may be legally protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), in which case, it may be an offence to lop, prune or fell the tree. In designated Conservation Areas, it is possible that all trees are subject to such preservation restrictions, even though they may consist of such troublesome weed timber as sycamore or poplar! Make sure, therefore, that you are within your legal rights, before you make the first cut.
