Creating a classic
garden

back to Garden Surfaces Structure, whether consisting of living
plants or building materials, should be symmetrical and formal.
Hedges will be straight sided,
evenly clipped and appear solid. Shrubs, placed in key positions, can be
clipped to specific shapes and sizes and, more importantly, kept to those
proportions year after year.
If you have differing levels,
make use of these to create terracing with steps. This will add interest, since
the view will change at different levels.
In a small garden, try to arrange
for at least one long vista so that a view is possible along its length, but
only from certain points in the garden.
End your vista with a
beautiful plant, a statue, a summerhouse or some other feature.
There is no need to turn your entire garden over to classical
design. Formal and informal areas will sit comfortably together, allowing you
to go for both. |
