back to Painting & Decorating Step: 1 Painted woodwork in
sound condition can be redecorated after it has been washed and lightly rubbed
down with sandpaper to provide a key for the new paint.
Paint the walls of the house
before you tackle the woodwork. Divide each wall into manageable sections that
you can complete in a single session using features such as windows, chimneys,
drainpipes and mouldings as boundaries. Wrap newspaper around downpipes to
protect them from paint spatter, and cover extension roofs and
porches.
Step: 2 Start
painting at the top of a wall, using a l00 or 150mm (4 or 6in) paintbrush.
Choose a brush with coarse bristles recommended for use with masonry paint. To
coat the wall evenly, apply the paint in all directions.
Use a stippling action on
textured surfaces, dabbing the ends of the bristles against the wall. A
long-pile roller is a faster alternative to a paintbrush, but it can be
difficult to work with a roller tray up a ladder. In some places, you can avoid
climbing ladders by using a long handled roller.
Step: 3 Remove any splashed paint from doors and
windows with a cloth dampened with white spirit or water. (Check instructions
on the paint tin.)
