Consider the weather when planning outside work. Wood, in particular, should never be painted while wet. Ideally, paint the outside of your house when it is at its driest, but not during a really hot spell.

September and June are generally good months for decorating.

Don't be tempted to skip vital preparation. It may appear to be unrewarding and time-consuming work, but thorough preparation is the key to trouble-free decorating.

If the walls are porous, protect them with a clear waterproofer. There should be no need to paint brickwork but paint cement, render or pebbledash with masonry paint.

• Masonry paint is available in two basic versions - smooth and textured. Smooth masonry paint goes a lot further, but textured paint is better for covering minor blemishes and hairline cracks.

• Water-based masonry paint dries faster than solvent-based paint. It is lower odour, less harmful to the environment and you can wash your brushes in water.

• Pour masonry paint into a paint kettle - it's lighter and easier to hold than a can of paint and much safer to handle at the top of a ladder.
