Step: 1 Painted woodwork in sound condition can be redecorated after it has been washed and lightly rubbed down with sandpaper to provide a key for the new paint.

Step: 2 If paint is flaking, it should be stripped back to bare wood. The most effective tool for stripping old paintwork is an electrically operated hot-air gun. Hold the nozzle of the gun just above the surface until the paint softens. Then remove paint with a scraper. Use a shavehook to scrape softened paint from mouldings. Sand (Sandpaper Chart) stripped surfaces smooth.

Step: 3 Repair decayed wood, using a wet rot repair kit.

Step: 4 Replace loose, cracked or missing window putty.
