Step: 1 Remove all loose paint and dirt with a stiff brush. This can be a messy job, so wear eye protectors and a gauze face mask.

Step: 2 Treat mould growth with a fungicide - leave it on for 24 hours and then wash the wall thoroughly with clean water. Scrape thick growths of mould from the wall with a wooden or plastic spatula. Then treat the masonry with fungicide, as in Step 2 above, and let the masonry dry thoroughly.

Step: 3 Fill cracks and holes in a rendered wall with fresh cement containing a little PVA bonding agent to help it stick to the masonry.

Step: 4 Paint powdery or chalky surfaces with a stabilising primer to bind the loose material to the wall.
