Greenhouse &
propagation

back to Greenhouse As soon as your new seedlings have grown big
enough to handle, they are ready for pricking out.
Step: 1 Fill a
clean seed tray, or small individual pots with potting compost. Firm very
gently and then make holes with a small dibber or a piece of stick. A standard
seed tray 35cm by 22.5cm (14ins by 9ins) will accommodate, on average, 48
seedlings.
Step: 2 Using an
old pencil or a sharpened stick, carefully tease seedlings out of their
compost. Handle them by the seed leaf - never by their main stems - and with as
little root disturbance as possible, plant them gently into their
holes.
Step: 3 Firm up
the compost but do not tamp it down too hard. Seedlings should be planted no
deeper than they were growing originally.
Step: 4 Water thoroughly, using a fine rose and
water at room temperature. Protect from strong sunlight for the first day or
two.
Try placing newly pricked out plants under the greenhouse staging
for a day or two, especially during hot weather, so that their roots can
recover before they are brought into full, strong sunlight. |
