Plant selection and
care

back to Plants Shrubs are as important for foliage as for
flower. Some have golden, purplish or bronze foliage, making a lovely contrast
with each other as well as with flowers.
In natural landscapes, shrubs
form a layer below the level of the trees. Imitate this in a garden by grouping
shrubs in mixed borders, or by planting them below taller trees. Most shrubs
develop a permanent rounded or dome-shaped outline but there are exceptions,
like Viburnum plicatum whose branches form graceful tiers.
Most shrubs bloom in spring
or early summer, but there are plenty with interest in other seasons. When
choosing, save some space for such late shrubs as Olearia and hydrangeas as
well as those like cotoneaster which have brilliant berries.
Plan ahead when planting, giving your plants enough room to
expand. |
If you are planning a new
garden and want quick results, mix fast growing varieties amongst slower
growing shrubs. After two or three seasons, remove some of the faster shrubs to
make room for those which are slower to establish.
Containerised shrubs can be planted at any time, but diligent
aftercare is essential. Bare-rooted shrubs must be planted only when dormant in
autumn and winter. |
