Pruning shrubs and
climbers

back to Pruning Although most heathers are low
growing, they benefit from being trimmed back after flowering.
Varieties prized for their golden
or reddish foliage will look especially good if pruned back after
flowering.
In an established heather bed, it
may be easier to prune with shears, rather than secateurs.
On mature heather plants, prune
out old, gnarled, woody stems.
If heathers are grown
together with dwarf conifers, they should be trimmed away from the lower
foliage of the conifers, to allow them to spread out.
Save heather trimmings, as these can be used to make a warm, dry
mulch for protecting tender plants over winter. |
