Pruning shrubs and
climbers

back to Pruning Pruning will encourage wisteria
to flower, provided it is grown against a sunny south facing or west facing
wall and providing it is a grafted variety.
In its first couple of
seasons, allow a new wisteria to develop a number of main stems. Thereafter,
every August, prune the long, wispy growths back to these main stems, counting
about seven buds or leaves up from the main stem. In January, shorten these
further, to two or three buds.
Wisteria is worth buying when in flower. If you have seen it in
bloom, you know it has the ability to flower, even though it may take three or
more seasons in your garden before it flowers again.
